The origins of the University can be traced back to the "Han Gaku Zoshikan (藩学造士館)" founded by Shimazu Shigehide in the Edo period. He established Meijikan (明時館) for astronomical observations and calendar studies and published various books including the Encyclopedia of Agricultural Science. In 1773, Shigehide founded a temple and a martial arts training hall intending to cultivate people who would be beneficial to his clan through education.
