The village bell is ringing, warning that the Minecraft 1.21 update is approaching. While the latest Minecraft update is still probably a ways off, the details have started to spill as of this year's Minecraft Live presentation.

Like last year, Mojang says that the reveal for update 1.21 doesn't represent the full feature list and more will be announced throughout development. Until then, let's get into what we know so far about the Minecraft 1.21 update.

There isn't a release date for Minecraft 1.21 just yet, but it's expected to arrive in the middle of 2024. That tracks with recent years. Minecraft 1.20 and 1.19 both launched in June of their respective years.

Mojang says that the Trial Chambers are built with new copper and tuff block sets as well. If you look closely at the video Mojang shared along with the 1.21 announcement, you can spot what appear to be copper trap doors and window-like patterned copper panes. The blocks that look like a new variant of chiseled stone bricks are likely a chiseled Tuff block.

New to Minecraft 1.21 is a new type of structure: the Trial Chamber is a procedurally generated underground structure designed to present new challenges to explorers. Using the new copper and tuff block sets plus the new copper bulb, Trial Chambers will also include the new Trial Spawner block, which is a variant on the usual mob spawner blocks found in other explorable structures like mineshafts or woodland mansions.

Trial Spawner blocks differ from normal spawners in that they spawn a specific number of enemies and then pause spawning for a time after. They'll dispense loot after you've successfully completed the challenge and emit smoke from their tops to let you know they're currently on cooldown. Trial Chambers are also the home to the newest enemy in the Minecraft 1.21 menagerie: the Breeze, who will be on hand to throw you around with their wind projectiles.

Y'all know about the combat tests Mojang did all the way back in 2020? Well if so, you probably know that it added some of the old combat back like spam clicking and such but kept some of the changes of 1.9 like shields and axes plus some new shenanigans like tridents being buffed e.g. . I think Mojang have them planned for 1.21 but also think they'll make it an end update. Before you think I'm being a bit unrealistic, think about it. Most of the recent updates didn't have a solid theme, 1.19 added a new biome, some new features and FROG. 1.20 just added archeology (which was a promise made 3 updates ago), Camels, a new biome and 2 new woods so it's about time we got a themed update, that fans actually wanted like 1.17, so the end update isn't out of the question. Okay, back to the combat system. Now Mojang has finally added all of the features promised in the start of the caves and cliffs saga, they are free to continue other stuff. Specifically, combat. It's easy because it's already mostly coded, everybody would like it and there's even fan builds of it, proving 100% Mojang could do it if some random Devs can. The point is, combat needs an update and Mojang knows 100% that they'd have to do it eventually or Mojang would lose a portion of their community, taking their last hope for a revamped combat update. I also have an idea for a new weapon. The Scythe. Crafted with 2 sticks, a hoe and 2 of the material the hoe uses (gold, diamonds etc.). It could be like the Java Axe but it does twice the damage. It just gives Mining Fatigue + Slowness when holding it which is a fair payoff for the huge damage. It would also have a slow cool down. Many of you'd think that this is sort of, you know, pointless, but if you had a Juggernaut kit on a server or something, it would work out well. In singlplayer it would be useful for slaying bosses without second thought and mayyyybe could block attacks like the 1.8 sword mechanics. Also, I'd really like to see the furnace minecart speed boost reimplemented. That's about all I gotta say.

Minecraft already has a lot lined up for 1.21, with trial chambers and auto-crafters among the most exciting features announced. However, after a controversial year with a contentious update, a somewhat overlooked spinoff, and a highly debated mob vote, there are still more changes that ought to come to Minecraft.

The moment we've all been waiting for is finally here. Sure, Minecraft Live is packed from beginning to end with new reveals and announcements for the entire Minecraft franchise, but many are most eager to see the first of the next major Minecraft content update. During this year's Minecraft Live event, that update falls under the 1.21 version number, and it's officially heading to players in mid-2024.

Mojang Studios' Agnes Larsson and Jens Bergensten took to the stage to confirm the first set of features to be included in next year's Minecraft content update, following the Minecraft 1.20 "Trails & Tales Update" released earlier in 2023. While more are likely to be confirmed later, Mojang Studios now only confirms features that are already in active development and near completion. The 1.21 update also lacks a name, which will come closer to release.

There was no mention of these features beginning to trickle out to passionate Minecraft testers through experimental snapshots and preview builds, but it likely won't be long before players can begin getting their hands on the earliest versions of these Minecraft 1.21 features. Mojang Studios develops every update alongside the Minecraft community, and it should be no different here.

While these features are all exciting additions to Minecraft 1.21, it's almost certainly not the complete picture of the update. Mojang Studios now only announces features when they're already almost complete and ready for testing, that way players aren't disappointed when promised features either don't arrive or arrive in a changed form (looking at you, archeology).

For one, we'll likely see the winner of the Minecraft Live 2023 Mob Vote be a part of Minecraft 1.21, which is the Armadillo. There are probably also other features and mechanics that Mojang Studios may be designing or prototyping, but just aren't quite ready to show to players yet. Minecraft 1.21 isn't officially releasing until sometime in mid-2024, so there's still a lot of development time between us and the complete feature list for Minecraft's next content update.

When Minecraft 1.21 does arrive, though, it'll release simultaneously for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on Xbox, Windows PC, PlayStation, Switch, and mobile devices, as well as Minecraft: Java Edition on Windows PC, macOS, and Linux.
