Sri Venkateswara College

University of Delhi

Fifty years ago, three stalwarts in the public domain, Smt Durgabai Deshmukh, Dr K.L. Rao and Dr C. Anna Rao, transformed their spirited vision and dream to reality in the shape of Sri Venkateswara College. Fired with the zeal of promoting the cause of education, the college was set up at New Delhi under the benign auspices of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh in 1961. The foundation stone for the construction of a full-fledged building in the spacious 15 acres provided at Dhaula Kuan was laid on August 20, 1961 appropriately and auspiciously by Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, India's outstanding teacher, scholar and statesman. The TTD is an autonomous organization managing the affairs of Lord Balaji. While it maintains 12 temples and their sub-shrines, it employs about about 14,000 persons and runs charitable and educational institutions throughout the country.

Today, the College has around 3888 students on its rolls, offers more than a score of different courses in the Humanities, Commerce and Science disciplines with 231 teaching and non-teaching staff. The college is known for its excellence in academics, sports and overall development of students who have the privilege of studying here. One of the important achievements of the college was to be recognized by the UGC as a Center for “potential for excellence” (2004-2008) and as “Star College” by the Department of BioTechnology, Government of India (2011) that has helped to strengthen undergraduate education and training in the Life Sciences and Biotechnology. Further, all the Science departments of the college were given DBT Star Status.

Sri Venkateswara College believes in imparting “value based instruction‟ which is woven into the very texture of the “value integrated education‟ that we impart to the students. Our scholarly pursuits are nurtured with the idealism of spirituality and we believe that our effort to inculcate the values of both in our students is the only way to ensure their holistic development. We sincerely strive to achieve that perfect balance in our endeavors here.

The Department of Biochemistry at Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi was established in the year 1989. The undergraduate program, a brainchild of Padma Vibhushan Late Prof. B. K. Bachhawat was started to groom the scientific inquisitiveness in young students.

His vision, and the invaluable efforts of our former principals Dr. V. Krishna Moorthy and Dr. P. Hemalatha Reddy have consolidated the roots of the department. It has been 30 years since the Department of Biochemistry, Sri Venkateswara College sent out their first batch of undergraduates into the world of scientific research and opportunities; apprehensive of how they would survive. We are happy to say that today we look back with a great sense of pride. The teaching in the department commenced from a time when standardization of simple experiments was an uphill task and has now evolved to a laboratory scenario wherein, innovative projects have become a routine.

Our focus on education has never been pure academics, infact our strength lies in sensitizing our students to global challenges and inspiring them to ideate innovative solutions for improving quality of life. Indeed, alumni of the department are spread worldwide in good positions and in fields ranging from pure academics (20%) and research (50%) to industry (16%). Our highlights are several entrepreneurial ventures and students involved in translation research. Our achievements are accentuated by the activities of the Biochemical society, “Catalysis”. The society has played a pivotal role in providing a platform for students to express, explore and experience the joy of science.

The genesis of MindSpar was in tune with the changing pattern of education, where we felt the need to introduce an event that connects Science education to the Reality of the society around us. The current buzzword is ‘Innovation’ and the young minds uncluttered with straitjacketed thoughts are the best place to tap for innovative ideas. The current pandemic that has held the global community in a stranglehold has forced us to rethink the way society and science are headed. Things that we had taken as issues that we had had a grip on like education focus and outreach, food quality and lifestyle, environmental stability as well as emotional and mental health issues have suddenly stepped out of the shadows and come into the glare of the stage lights. The changing society now demands the need for innovative ideas that address the basic tenets of society; Food, Water and a safe place to reside. It also has shown that education is a multi-layered experience that should cater to the holistic development of an individual.

Science has leapfrogged from discovery to invention to innovation. And this much flogged word innovation itself now also needs a rethink. Yes, everyone would agree that reinventing the wheel is a bad and wasteful idea, but changing the wheel to suit the changes in society is innovation; as exemplified by the snow tyres and wheels. Similarly, discarding some tried and tested processes in society and science as being outdated may not be such a good idea, viewing them under the innovation lens could promote changes that could lead to an evolution in process that is beneficial. The department has therefore now expanded its view on education and gone way beyond the simple academic confines of a syllabus, to undertaking co academic activities that help provide the students with a multi and interdisciplinary outlook on ‘Self, Society and Science’.

CATALYSIS - The Biochemical Society

Conceived in 2003 in face of the growing need, to cultivate scientific awareness and to bring out the creative genius of students of today.

"Just like a right catalyst which can turn ordinary molecules into high energy yielding products, Catalysis, the Biochemical Society of Sri Venkateswara College serves to modify and convert the students into budding biochemists with the aim of providing students as much practical knowledge and exposure as possible and helping to make them proficient scientists and leaders for tomorrow.

The society carries out a complex reaction involving multiple events throughout the year which gives a cumulative result into a student who is not only scientifically aware but knows how to apply the concepts in real life".
