My personal journey with meditation began during a time of fear and uncertainty. When I was forced to step back from playing soccer, something I had done since I was three years old, I started attending yoga classes with my mother. I immediately fell in love with yoga, but it was the deep sense of peace I experienced through focused breathing that truly captivated me.
That spark deepened in college during a SKY Happiness retreat, where I met others who had also been transformed by meditation and mindfulness. The strong sense of community I felt there only reinforced the benefits I had begun to experience through my own practice. When someone at the retreat suggested starting a meditation group at Fordham, I jumped at the opportunity and offered to help. From there, we founded the Fordham Meditation Club, which grew to include up to 36 members at its peak.
As a founder and leader in the club, I guided mindful movement sessions before our sitting meditations and facilitated open-ended reflections and group conversations to close each meeting. During midterms and finals, I emphasized calm, grounding practices and positive affirmations. I also helped organize club trips to Empty Cloud Monastery in West Orange, New Jersey and joint-events with the Active Minds Club at Fordham, further deepening our collective experience.
After a year of leading the Meditation Club, I brought my passion and experience into a professional setting as a camp counselor, where I taught 45-minute yoga classes three times a day, five days a week. There, I witnessed firsthand how mindful movement can create a safe, open, and collaborative community. That experience left me feeling even more empowered and inspired to continue my leadership in the Meditation Club during my senior year. Since then, I’ve led both group and one-on-one meditation sessions for friends and family, and was invited to teach yoga at an event hosted by Fordham’s Counseling and Psychological Services office.
Today, I practice yoga and meditation daily and continue to deepen my path as a member of the Plymouth Zen Group, which meets Monday evenings at Zion Lutheran Church. I’m excited to share meditation, yoga, and breathwork professionally and expand my client base which I hope will help bring peace, compassion, and joy to those who need it most.
