The mindfulness bell can be the grand temple bell, the activity bell, or even the distant church bells. It can also be a chime set to go off every fifteen minutes, or even the sound of a telephone ringing.

Although the first part of meals at Plum Village usually take place in silence, people do have conversations after lunch and dinner. At these times, it is amazing to see the dining hall briefly fall silent at the sound of a bell. People have often been saved from potentially heated debates by the bell offering a chance to stop, pause, and reflect!

You can choose a start and end time for the period during which the bell will sound, and how often it should do so. This can be set to occur just once, or to repeat each day. You can also decide on your preferred sound from three options which represent the different bells used at Plum Village.

Whenever it sounds, just as with the mindfulness bells in Plum Village, you can use it as a cue to pause whatever you are doing and take three mindful breaths, returning to the here and now and reconnecting with your body.

Thank you for bringing such beautiful purpose to a cold technical device. The bell sound is exquisite even on the phone speakers, and the reminder to stop and meditate is what many in the world need. Grateful for this generous gift.

Dear community. This app shows so clearly the work and love for the world of this beautiful master. I am so grateful I have just found it. And as all the creations of Thay, it contains all the items one needs to grow in mindfulness. This is a treasure. Thank you so much.

I have just begun using the bell and it is a great reminder to take 3 mindful breaths. I love all the teachings on this app, on Youtube and in books written by Thai. Thank you for everything. Were I economically able i would have loved to spend time at a retreat.

However, there are a few situations that could stop the bell working on your phone or tablet. This post describes how to fix any problems which could occur when configuring the Bell of Mindfulness on your device.

To ensure you will hear the Bell of Mindfulness, add Plum Village app to any Focus that you wish to hear to bell in. (To do this, you must ensure notifications are enabled for Plum Village, otherwise it would not show in the Apps list.)

On Android phones or tablets, Do Not Disturb settings can vary significantly depending on system version and device model. Within Android, the bell technically functions as an alarm, so providing that alarms are not silenced by the Do Not Disturb settings, the bell should be audible.

On Android 8.1 and below, Do Not Disturb mode has three options when enabled: Total Silence, Alarms Only, and Priority Only. The bell will be heard if you select Alarms Only or Priority Only, but not if you select Total Silence.

On Android 9 and above, Do Not Disturb settings are more extensive. Within Settings, choose Sound > Do Not Disturb > Exceptions and ensure that Alarms is enabled; the bell will then ring even when Do Not Disturb is turned on.

When first enabling the bell, you will be prompted to allow notifications, if this has not already been done. However, if notifications have been declined or were disabled later, you will need to enable them in your device settings.

When iOS 15.0 was released by Apple on 20th September 2021, the bell stopped working on devices which have installed this update. If you experience this problem, please update to the latest version of the app via the App Store which includes iOS 15 support (the latest version is v2.9 at the time of writing).

This is typically caused by battery optimizations, which depend on the manufacturer and model of your device. Battery optimizations may lead to the app closing after some period of time, or otherwise restrict the app in some way so that it cannot play the bell sound.

I downloaded this app years ago and thought I had removed it. However, with purchase of a new chromebook the mindfulness bell began to insert itself into my day again. This is lovely, and also I would like to remove it because the chromebook is used primarily for Zoom meetings for my business, for which I prefer not to use the bell. The problem is, I cannot find the app to remove it. The only fix I have been able to apply is to hit the pause option on the notification from the bell app when it pops up as the bell is sounding. Any ideas? I have tried searching for the chrome extension on my device, as well as the app. No results.

I appreciate the gift; it is beautiful and perfect. However, now I am using my laptop for a lot of online meetings and the bell will not stop sounding no matter what I do. I have tried deleting the app. I have tried putting my laptop on Do Not Disturb mode. These do not stop the bell. Just muted it by muting the volume for now, but for my next meeting I will need the volume. To be blunt: please help me get rid of this feature.

Often when we are on our computers or smartphones, we become completely lost in our work and completely disconnected from our body in the here and now. You may like to program a bell of mindfulness on your computer or smartphone and every quarter of an hour (or as often as you like), the bell sounds so you have a chance to stop, breathe and relax.

Plum Village is a new meditation app that can support us to cultivate mindfulness, compassion and joy through guided meditations, deep relaxations, practice poems, bells of mindfulness and many other features.

In the last decade, countless scientific studies confirmed that a sustained mindfulness practice promotes relaxation, reduced stress levels, better sleep, reduced anxiety, and increased concentration. In general the benefits of meditation have been proven to improve mental health and the overall well-being of practitioners.

The app features resources treasured by thousands of Plum Village practitioners, like guidance on practicing with the inner child, the famous pebble meditation, the four mantras, the five contemplations before eating, guided deep relaxations (body scan), music tracks with practice songs and chants offered by nuns, monks, and lay practitioners, and even nature sounds recorded in the Plum Village Monastery in France, and other practice centers around the world.

Originally a meditation timer, Insight Timer is now a fun, connected way to support your meditation practice, as well as a marketplace for mindfulness exercises, courses, masterclasses, and mindfulness meditation sessions. It includes free guided mediations from Thich Nhat Hanh and other leading meditation teachers. For those new to meditation, there are introductory guided meditations and a supportive community to help you get started. Insight Timer works on all iPhone and Android devices.

MindBell rings periodically during the day, to give you the opportunity to stop, breathe and smile. Stopping with the sound of the bell is an essential practice developed by Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village community, and is at the foundation of cultivating mindfulness, calm awareness, presence, and self-compassion throughout the day.

Similarly with some mindfulness apps, you can configure how long each kind of break lasts, and how long between breaks, and the breaks can be set to count backwards when you take a natural break, e.g. when you go away from your computer.

Mindfulness Bell Menu Bar is a menubar application to aid you in your mindfulness practice. Simply choose an interval and a small or large bell will sound at the prescribed time to invite you to take a moment to observe the breath.

I am an elementary school counselor in a conservative town in Georgia, which is part of the "Bible belt." This year I have been bringing my bell of mindfulness into the classrooms and listening to the sound of the bell as we mindfully breathe in and out I saw signs throughout the year that the students and teachers were enjoying the sound of the bell and that it was improving the lives of the schoolchildren and teachers, and enriching the community.

I knew I was on the right track when a second grade student told me that she had taught her two-year-old brother to breathe mindfully and think of the bell during conflicts at his daycare center. She told me proudly that her brother practiced breathing mindfully when another child bit him on the nose, and her brother chose to think of the bell instead of retaliating. On another occasion a fourth grader told me that he was upset and just wanted to invite the bell to sound in my office, breathe in and out, and go back to class to resume learning. It worked beautifully for him he invited the bell three times, said, "Thank you, I feel much better," and went back to class.

In the last weeks before the end of the school year there were several occurrences of the bell changing the emotional climate of the school. First, teachers began to ask me to download the bell sound from the Washington, D.C.'s Mindfulness Practice Center Webpage, to sound periodically throughout the school day so students could pause, breathe in and out, and be refreshed to help their learning ability.

Next, during a very heated parent-teacher conference in my office, the bell sound from the computer saved the conference as all parties in conflict paused to breathe and be more mindful of expressing their displeasure with the other in a more respectful way. Last, my Principal, who is also a southern Baptist preacher, asked me to down load the bell on his computer. He brought the bell to a faculty meeting to sound so all the teachers could breathe together; he also reminded me to remember the bell and to breathe while I was in a stressful situation.

It was beautiful to see how the bell of mindful ness and conscious breathing could transform the atmosphere of a public school into a more mindful and respectful environment for everyone, even in a small southern "Bible belt" town in Georgia. I say, "Amen!"

Yesterday afternoon, as I was chopping vegetables at record speed and throwing them into the slow cooker in a desperate attempt to get dinner made before I had to run out the door, I heard the bell ring from a floor away, and I smiled. Suddenly my chopping became less manic and my breathing slowed and nothing seemed quite so urgent. In a short time the bell has gone from unnerving to comforting. ff782bc1db
