Fall 2025: Updates to MW3D in-process! Stay tuned + visit LIVE Environments to learn more.
MilkyWay3D.org (MW3D) is a global, community-driven project building a dynamic, three-dimensional view of our galaxy. Focusing first on the Sun’s neighborhood (within a few kiloparsecs), it brings together data, tools, and people to explore the structure and evolution of the Milky Way. The site serves as a central hub for research, education, and outreach, all grounded in open science and open data.
The first time MilkyWay3D.org was presented to the astronomy research community was at the 2023 Surveying the Milky Way: The Universe in Our Own Backyard conference, in the poster shown here, and in talks by PI Catherine Zucker and Harvard graduate student Theo O'Neill.
In late 2023, MilkyWay3D.org imagery, as seen in glue and WorldWide Telescope, was featured (21 sec in, after ads) in this Apple launch of the M3 Macs.
