An ironic reinterpretation of Jacques-Louis David’s Bonaparte Crossing the Saint Bernard Pass, this work replaces Napoleon with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The heroic grandeur of the original — dramatic pose, turbulent skies, and majestic horse — is subverted: Zelenskyy rides a child’s toy horse, turning historical pathos into playful parody.
Zelenskyy’s past as an actor and comedian, including a previous parody of Napoleon, adds cultural layers. The work explores the boundary between performance and authenticity, heroism and its mediated image. In this space where history, politics, and satire intersect, metamodernist sensibilities emerge: irony and seriousness coexist, inviting the viewer to oscillate between admiration, amusement, and critical reflection.
