Introduction
As a future educator, I have confidence in the concepts I have learned in my classes, work I do as a teacher’s assistant, and the fieldwork I have conducted. These ideas have given me the ability to develop a concise teaching philosophy. My future classroom will be an inclusive and safe space that will reflect the academic, social, and emotional needs of all learners.
Effective Classroom Management
An important part of my teaching philosophy will be the use of effective classroom management. I do not plan on being a very strict teacher; however, I do believe that daily operations run smoother when there is a schedule and rules in place. A crucial aspect of classroom management is building mutually respected relationships between myself and my students. The implementation of these relationships begins with allowing students to have input on the way the class is run, what classroom jobs they think they can handle, and what rules should be enforced. I plan on rewarding my students for working hard academically as well as treating their classroom and classmates like their homes and families. I will make sure that my schedule is carefully thought out to ensure time for learning, mindfulness, and fun. I will practice rituals such as daily greetings and breaks that allow for students to share any problems they may have. I want my students to feel safe in my classroom and excited to come to school.
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
A very crucial aspect of my teaching philosophy will be the use of culturally relevant pedagogy. I believe it is an honor of mine to get to know my students and the cultures they possess. Cultures can include their family background, ethnicity, pronoun, likes/dislikes, etc. It is important to learn to understand each other through acceptance and inclusion. Involving students’ cultures in their learning will keep them engaged and will allow them to relate to the material. This ensures students success. I will also use restorative justice techniques to take a progressive approach on real world issues. Students are very aware of current events and will mentally benefit from discussing them. This brings me to social/emotional development as well as trauma informed instruction. Unfortunately, many students are facing serious issues that are constantly affecting them. I hope to be an adult that my students feel comfortable enough with to open up to. I plan on using brain breaks to get them moving, yoga time for mindfulness, and a dedicated time to talk about our problems and feelings we may be having.
Differentiation
The last critical aspect of my teaching philosophy is the use differentiation to address the needs of all learners. Every year a teacher’s class is made up of students with varying abilities. Teachers may have language learning students, students with individualized education plans, gifted students, etc. I will learn about my students and come up with a plan to aid each of their unique learning styles. I recognize that this is hard and timely work; however, each child is special, and they deserve to be successful in my class in order to be prepared for the next grade.
Conclusion
I have carefully thought out my teaching philosophy and understand that I will learn what works and what does not when I have the ability to practice it. I understand that I will be constantly learning and figuring out what is best for my students. My classroom will be a place that all students feel welcome, happy, and excited to learn.
