Science communication seminar: "How to communicate complexity in the age of simplicity"

The Biophysics Society of Milan is hosting a cross-discipline interview to showcase the nuances of the scientific communication field and inspire students who may be considering it as a career.

The conversation will investigate questions like:

What are the responsibilities of disseminators of scientific discovery to the public?

From the pandemic to climate change, how can we effectively communicate scientific processes in a fast-paced media cycle?

Join our discussion and Q&A session!

This hybrid event is open to all of Milan’s students and faculty interested. Come in person to UPDATE: Biologia B8 or follow online (Zoom details below).

Giuliano Zanchetta, Università degli Studi di Milano

For the last event of the Milano student chapter Biophysical week Giuliano Zanchetta from the Complex Fluids & Molecular Biophysics Group at UniMi will give a seminar titled “DNA liquid crystals: back to the origin of life”.

DNA liquid crystals: back to the origin of life. Here you can read the abstract of the talk:

''I will describe the serendipitous discovery of the spontaneous self-assembly and phase separation of complementary DNA and RNA oligomers - down to single nucleotides - from complex mixtures, mediated by their partial ordering into liquid crystalline domains [1,2,3,4]. Moreover, the alignment of stacked aggregates of paired nucleotides can provide a template for their chemical ligation, boosting the formation of longer polymers, which on turn stabilize liquid crystalline ordering and partitioning in a sort of autocatalytic mechanism [5,6]. This set of observations may suggest a pathway for the prebiotic emergence of molecular selection and, ultimately, of linear genetic polymers with sequence-directed assembly. I will then discuss some of the experiments currently under way to test such hypothesis, on prebiotically plausible chemical moieties and complexation with peptides [7].''
