Unit of work: Environmental Issues
Level: 7th grade (12/13-year-olds)
Unit objectives: By the end of this unit, students will be able to…
Describe their neighborhood regarding environmental issues, green projects or environmentally friendly actions.
Recognize and explain what pollution is, its different types and their characteristics
Design informative posters about the different types of pollution, their causes and effects and some ideas to reduce their impact.
Design or create a decorative or practical object using recycled or reused materials and present it orally to their classmates using specific vocabulary
Analyse pieces of news about environmental issues
Look for key information and summarise texts
Deliver oral presentations about environmental issues
Duration of each lesson: 60 min
Student's level of English: Intermediate
Form: 7th grade (12/13-year-olds)
The websites will be used as a resource of information and to practice, not to produce.
The teacher will activate students' prior knowledge by presenting the following questions and they will answer: (a,b and c options are just expected answers, these are open-ended questions so they can respond hosnestly and think of possible answers)
If you run out of jam, what would you do with the jar?
a. throw it away
b. use it to keep things organized
c. paint or decorate it and use it as a flower vase (or any other use)
If you find at home old books that you will not use, what you do with them?
a. throw them away
b. sell them/donate them
c. take them to a green spot where it could be recycled
Then, she will show the students the following video of EPA (Uniated States Environmental Protection Agency) to later on introduce the terms recycling and reusing and discuss whether they put these ideas into practice or not (or if they will do). After watching the video, students will go back to the same questions and reflect on the answers. Hopefully they will go for the more environmentally friendly options.
Students will explore the interactive map on Recycle City They will take a look at the different regions, places and descriptions of the environmentally friendly actions carried out in the city. After some minutes, students will share the places they 'visited', conclusions and ideas.
Once the discussion is over, the teacher and students will go over a transcript of a video on BBC Bitesize 'Remarkable Recycling'. They will read the transcript, go over the vocabulary (donate, old, recycling, shabby, repurpose, etc.) answer some questions orally (those proposed by the website) and check comprehension with a quiz (on the website as well)
After that, students will be given a wordsearch where they will find relevant vocabulary related to pollution and recycling (these words are present in the websites previously explored) By doing this, students are keeping record of the new vocabulary.
Taking into account the map and descriptions previously explored, students will be asked to go around their neigborhood and complete a chart including different forms of pollution they come across and some green projects (if any). They could take photos or record videos with their cell phones and add them to the chart. The following class they will share their findings and conclusions with the rest of the class. Students should include in their descriptions the vocabulary practiced.
Lesson 2
Warmer
At the beginning of the class, students will share their findings on the previous class' homework. Students will reflect, discuss, compare and contrast environmental issues and green measurements present in each of their neigbourhoods. (using the vocabulary recently learned)
Now, students will get into small group and choose a topic related to environmental issues: air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, noise pollution, deforestation, climate change, wildlife conservation, waste management, etc.
Once they choose the topic, they will look for articles in National Geographic to deepen their knowledge about the topic: causes, efects or consequences, who is effected the most by this issue (kids, older people, animals, etc.) and ways to mitigate or reduce its impact.
After that, students will go to BBC News to look for a piece of news adressing the topic chosen and analyse it. (what happened, where, how, why, causes and effects. Any possible solution?) They will have to complete a google form (provided by the teacher) including all the necessary information they could find about the topic.
The Teacher will guide students and answer any queries they have regarding vocabulary, grammar, topic or material choices.
Students will prepare an oral presentation about the topic selected, expanding on the information summarised in the form (and some reflection about it.) In order to do so, they will create some visual support for the presentantion including relevant information (poster, summary, mindmap or PPT)
