For this assignment I was tasked to work with a group/partner to research a location and collaborate on a presentation showing our locations, facts about our locations as well as how digitally/technologically connected they are compared to the rest of the globe. This project was heavy on considering the digital divide present in our chosen place.
I chose Seychelles and my partner chose Pantelleria, Italy
Through my group project, I found that Seychelles has access to internet cafes, which I've seen are very popular overseas and in places like Asia but not exactly as popular in the United States. Additionally, Seychelles tries its best to make SIM cards accessible the moment you land, to allow tourists mobile and data range.
Through my group project, I was astonished that an island filled with about 7K people had installed fiber-optic cables recently! There are still some towns in America that are yet to have fiber-optic access which made me realize how tourism is a big push for access such as this (which is also what helps afford it)
With my lessons through my collaboration with my Global Group project, I was able to learn many interesting facts about a completely new place. one large takeaway is that islands truly don't get enough rep when it comes to how important tourism and treating the land right can be a reflection on income and therefore digital access (like a domino effect). Seychelles and Pantelleria are small but also modernizing at paces not very well documented, which I feel definitely should change going forward. I struggled with finding sources that did justice to the hard work these islands do to upkeep with modern technological standards.
Additionally, my group partner did an amazing job in her information hierarchy and visual organization which allowed me to learn by her example, which is an opportunity I am so happy was given. My partner and I collaborated by giving each other tasks and filling out slide outlines of the presentation which made presenting our information easier and well organized. Overall, this was a group project that had ease in communication (through Outlook and Brightspace) which helped in our collaboration of our presentation.
