Here you can find some of my very best chess compositions created within last a couple of years. For each of the problems in the first part there is a separate pdf file with the diagram and fully detailed solution. Moreover, each diagram is also accompanied with a comment and brief summary of the analysis of the thematic content presented in the problem. Towards the bottom of the page there is a second part which is a single pdf file with a large collection of work for which the analyses will be presented separately. Figuring out the content of these problems without analyses being presented might be even more enjoyable!
A Super corrective Ideal Ruchlis – a synthesis of the Velimirovic black corrective Ideal Ruchlis and the Secondary Dombrovskis black corrective Ideal Ruchlis. Basically, this synthesis assumes a specific Ideal Ruchlis which is realized after a random and two black corrective defenses. To the best of my knowledge this is the very first presentation of this concept in a standard orthodox twomover set-to-actual play setup. Overall, 6+5 changed mates with an additional Ruchlis type mate transfer and a sacrificial check-allowing key.
A Zagoruiko 3×2 with a reciprocal mate transfer after a pair of black corrections combined with an Ideal Secondary Dombrovskis and a secondary Barnes/Sushkov. Meredith position.
Thematic tries 3 and 4 and the solution — a Zagoruiko 3×2 after a pair of black corrections (1...n∼ (a), 1...nxc4(b)!); moreover, two white thematic mates, 2.Rb5(A) and 2.Bd4(B), are reciprocally transferred from a random move by the black knight (1...n∼ (a)) to its a more precise version (1...nxc4(b)!); effectively, a reciprocal change of mates 2.Rb5(A) and 2.Bd4(B) after a pair of black corrections extended over three phases and completed to a full Zagoruiko 3×2.
A Zagoruiko 3×2 with a reciprocal change of mates after a pair of black corrections combined with a secondary Barnes/Sushkov line-interference dual-avoidance and a couple of additional tries with an extra changed mate and a logical connection to the set play.
Secondary Barnes/Sushkov with reciprocal line leaving/closing and self-interference (in try 2, Rh3 abandons h3-d3 line and 1...n∼(a) is not followed by 2.Rc4(A) due to a self-interference on a6-d3 line; on the other hand, in the solution Ba6 abandons a6-d3 line and 1...n∼(a) is not followed by 2.Be3(B) due to a self-interference on h3-d3 line).
A multi-phase change of play with line-closing black random and corrective play with a host of modern themes: Reciprocal Secondary Dombrovskis, 2× Zagoruiko 1+2+2 with transferred mates, Secondary Barnes/Sushkov and so on.
The line-closing black random and corrective strategy — 4 different threats (2.Qxd4(D), 2.Rf5(E), 2.Bd2, 2.Qh6); closing of 4 different white lines by 4 different random emulating black defenses (1...nc4(c), 1...nd7(d), 1...ng4(e), 1...nc6(b)) that are followed by 4 different white mates (2.Nd3(B), 2.Re4(A), 2.Rxg4, 2.Qxf7); 4 identical corrections (1...nxf3(f)) followed by 3 different mates (2.Re4(A), 2.Nd3(B), 2.Qxf3(C)) (overall, 11 out of 12 white mates are different); 4 different refutations (3 of them of the white line-closing type).
A multi-phase change of play with a triplet of phases with a doubling the secondary threat white strategy and black corrective separations. 6+5 changed mates and an Ideal Ruchlis plus a Zagoruiko 3×2 on two of the Ideal Ruchlis black defenses which effectively establishes a Zagoruiko 6+2+5. An additional Zagoruiko 3×2, Reciprocal Secondary Dombrovskis with changed mates, and three thematic tries (4, 5, and 6) refuted by the three (out of the four in total) Ideal Ruchlis thematic black defenses (1...qxd4((c), 1...pe3(d), and 1...qxf5(a)). The three main phases contain the black queen's focal positions worked out carefully so that the refutations of theses phases are unique but different black queen's moves (1...qxf7(h), 1...qe5(e), 1...qe6(g)).
Anoter Super corrective Ideal Ruchlis – an Ideal Ruchlis after a random and two black corrective defenses. Essentially a synthesis of the Velimirovic black corrective Ideal Ruchlis and the Secondary Dombrovskis black corrective Ideal Ruchlis. To the best of my knowledge only the second presentation of this concept ever in a conventional orthodox twomover setup, and the first one in a more challenging scenario with two phases and two different threats and a flight-giving key. The entire black corrections concept is combined with the white corrective attack in the solution and additional tries.
A Dombro-Ideal Ruchlis combination with black queen corrections and zugzwang. There are 6 pure changed mates between the set play and the solution after black thematic defenses (b)-(g), plus another change with repeated mates after black queen random move (a). Two Ideal Ruchlis concepts, one after thematic defenses (c)-(f) and another after thematic defenses (a,d,e,f). The second Ideal Ruchlis is after a pair of the black queen's corrective moves. Two thematic tries together with the solution complete a full Dombrovskis involving transferred thematic mates (A,B). The refutation of the first try completes another Domborvskis effect with the set play. In both, the set play and the solution black queen plays three corrective moves followed by different mates. Also, 4 changed mates with two of them being repeated and one transferred after black queen's random and corrective moves (a)-(d). The black queen zugzwang in the solution after two thematic tries with threats and an additional try, 1.Bxb5 ( 2.Bd3) pxb4 2.Qxb4, but 1...pc4!
An Ideal Ruchlis after a pair of black corrections combined with a triple Dombrovskis (2× secondary + 1× primary) and 2× triple refutations reductions zugzwang attacking concept. Flight-giving key as well.
A triple Dombrovskis (2× primary + 1× secondary) against the same threat, together with a changed mates type of Ideal Shedey theme after a pair of black corrections, Zagoruiko 1+2+3+3 in a threat form (1+1+2+2 after a pair of black corrective defenses plus 3 different threats), and an additional double anti-reversal/dual-avoiding play. Flight-giving key as well.
A triple Dombrovskis (2× primary + 1× secondary) against the same threat, a complete Ideal Shedey theme with black corrections and changed mates, Zagoruiko 2+3+4 in a threat form, and a white corrections refutations reductions attacking concept ((a/c/d) → (a/c) → (a).
A triple Dombrovskis (2× primary + 1× secondary) against the same threat, combined with a complete Ideal Shedey theme with changed mates and black corrections, Zagoruiko 2+3+3 in a threat form, and a supplemental white corrections/black promotions duel within a logical refutations reductions attacking concept ((c/d/e) → (d/e) → (e) → (no (c/d/e) but f)).
A Compressed Ideal Ruchlis with a pair of black corrections, a Secondary Dombrovskis, and a Zagoruiko.
A Dombro-Ideal Ruchlis combination with a multi-phase change of play. Compressed Ideal Ruchlis with a black correction between tries 1 and 2. Tries 1, 2, and the solution also show a complete Dombrovskis in a primary+secondary defenses form with changed mates. Three Zagoruikos after three thematic black moves, 1...ne3(a), 1...rxf8(c), and 1...ne1(d), which also refute tries 4, 3, and 2, respectively.
A Dombro-Ideal Ruchlis combination with secondary and tertiary black corrections and a host of line opening/closing and bivalve effects.
Compressed Ideal Ruchlis with black corrections between try 2 and the solution.
Try 2 and the solution – Super-compressed Ideal Dombrovskis in a secondary+tertiary defenses form with changed mates (in try 2, the secondary Dombrovskis defense, 1...ne4(b)!, is followed by 2.Ng6(B) whereas the tertiary Dombrovskis defense, 1...nf5(c)!!, is followed by 2.Q/Rxe6(C/D); in the solution, these moves are followed by Dombrovskis mates 2.Qd4(A) and 2.Ng6(B), respectively).
It doesn't require too much expertise to recognize that this concept and its realization are among a handful of my very best chess compositions (quite possibly even on par with the very best of them all).
A complete Dombrovskis (secondary + tertiary form) realized in only two phases and combined with 2× Ruchlis, tertiary level of black corrective defenses in the set play and 4 secondary corrective defenses in the solution. Flight-giving key as well.
A Compressed Ideal Ruchlis after a pair of black corrective defenses combined with 2× Dombrovskis (1× secondary + 1× primary), 2× Ruchlis, and a flight-giving key.
In the twin position (Rf8 → Ra4), there are 4 changed mates in total between the set play and the solution (3 of these changes are on a random move by nf4, 1...nd∼(b), and two of its corrections, 1...ne6(c) and 1...nxd3(e)) plus the already existing Compressed Ideal Ruchlis.
A multi-phase change of play with a third level zugzwang gradual refutations reductions with changed mates on the refutations being reduced resulting in a Zagoruiko 1+2+3. Also, another Zagoruiko 4×2 on the black pawn pe6 moves, a triple Zagoruiko 3×1 after each of the reduced refutations, and a triple Dombrovskis in a primary+secondary form.
The gradual refutations reductions concept that also produces a Zagoruiko 1+2+3 works (roughly speaking) in the following way: the set play is refuted by a quartet of black thematic moves, 1...pxd5(b)/nf4(c)/pf6(d)/pf2(e); each of the tries 1-3 successively provides a new mate on one of the remaining refutations and changes the mates already provided; as the number of mates increases by one in each new phase and since all the mates are different, this succession of newly introduced white phases/mates establishes precisely the Zagoruiko 1+2+3 after 1...pxd5(b)/nf4(c)/pf6(d) in tries 1-3.
A Shedey-Lacny combined with a cyclic threefold threat-mate transference, black corrections, Domborvskis effects, and a cyclic pseudo Le Grand.
A Shedey-Lacny combined with black corrections, primary and secondary Domborvskis effects, and a threefold threat-mate transference in a no white pawns setting.
Another presentation of Shedey-Lacny + cyclic threefold threat-mate transference complex combined with black corrections, Domborvskis effects, and a threefold cyclic pseudo Le Grand.
Black corrections Domborvskis effects combined with Shedey-Lacny, and a double threefold threat-mate transference.
The set play, try 1, and the solution – 2× threefold threat-mate transference in a set-play black corrections form ((B) is the threat in try 1 and follows (d) and (a) defenses in the set play and the solution, respectively; (A) is the threat in the solution and follows (e) and (b) defenses in the set play and try 1, respectively).
A multi-phase change of play with a host of different themes: Shedey-Lacny, Zagoruiko, Fleck, threat-mate transference, white-white/black-white anticritical/critical play, and quite a few changed and Ruchlis transferred mates.
Tries 1, 2 and 3 – 2+3+3 Zagoruiko in a threat form (1+2+2 after Shedey-Lacny thematic defenses 1...nxe7(a) and 1...pc4(b) plus three different threats).
White-white anticritical first moves 1.Qh1? and 1.Rc3? in try 3 and the solution (as well as in additional try 1.Rb3?); black-white critical refutation/defense 1...pe4! and 1...bd3.
A Shedey-Lacny + two additional changes and an overall multi-phase change of play with a host of various types of Domborvskis and black corrections effects.
Try 2 and the solution – 5 chnaged mates in a threat form (4 pure changes + 2 different threats).
A Shedey-Lacny combined with a double Domborvskis trifecta.
Dombrovskis trifecta by both Shedey-Lacny thematic moves 1...nxc3(a) and 1...nxg4(b) (Dombrovskis trifecta – three different types of the Dombrovskis effects by the same black defense against the same white threat: secondary defense/refutation, try refutation, primary defense with a changed mate).
A Shedey-Lacny and a complete cycle of white threatening and mating moves (∼C/AB,∼B/CA,∼A/BC) combined with gradual refutations reduction with changed mates on the refutations being reduced, cyclic pseudo Le Grand, and various corrective and Dombrovskis effects.
The refutations being reduced and their corresponding mates are: (aB) (thematic try 4); (aC,bA) (thematic try 2); (aB,bC,cD) (the solution); out of 6 gradually introduced mates (B – try 4, CA – try 2, BCD – the solution) 5 are changed or transferred.
A Shedey-anti Shedey-Lacny and a cyclic-anti cyclic change of white threatening and mating moves combined with cyclic pseudo Le Grand, black corrections, and Dombrovskis effects.
The threefold Shedey-anti Shedey-Lacny concept is roughly the following: one of the Shedey/Dombrovskis mates (A) is moved from the threat in the solution to the mate in try 2; on the other hand, the other of the Shedey/Dombrovskis mates (B) is moved from the threat in try 2 to its dual-avoiding complement (D) as the mate in the solution; overall, one half of the Lacny mechanism is in a Shedey/Dombrovskis spirit, while the other half is in a dual-avoiding anti Shedey/Dombrovskis spirit.
A Shedey-Lacny combined with cyclic (3×2) change of white threatening and mating moves, Zagoruiko, pseudo Le Grand, black corrections, and Dombrovskis effects.
A Shedey-Lacny combined with a complete (3×3) cyclic change of white threatening and mating moves, 2× pseudo Le Grand, black corrections, and Dombrovskis effects.
A multi-phase change of play with Shedey-Lacny plus Zagoruiko 3×2 split over four phases combined with black corrections and Dombrovskis effects.
The set play, tries 1 and 4 — Dombrovsksis trifecta, 1...pf6(a) is a secondary Dombrovsksis defense/refutaion in the set play, the Dombrovsksis refutation in try 1, and a primary Dombrovsksis defense in try 4.
A threefold Shedey-Lacny plus a 3×3 cyclic change of white threatening and mating moves combined with black corrections, double pseudo Le Grand, and Dombrovskis effects.
Another threefold Shedey-Lacny plus a 3×3 cyclic change of white threatening and mating moves combined with black corrections, double cyclic pseudo Le Grand, and Dombrovskis effects.
Due to the appearance of thematic defenses (i) and (j) in thematic try 2, the cycle also exists on two different black defenses in each of these phases; consequently one has a double cyclic pseudo Le Grand (∼BaC,∼CcA,∼AiC and ∼BbA,∼AjC,∼CdB) or a complete 3×3 pseudo Shedey-Lacny.
A transformation of the direct and masked white battery play into a threefold Shedey-Lacny plus a 3×2 cyclic change of white threatening and mating moves, pseudo Le Grand, triple 2.Nf4 dual avoidance, Zagoruiko, black corrections, and Dombrovskis effects.
A threefold Shedey-Lacny plus a triple Dombrovskis combined with additional mate changes and black corrections.
Try 1 and the solution — 4 changed mates in a threat form (3 pure changes plus two different threats); additional change after 1...qh2(c).
A threefold Shedey-Lacny with only 3 effects and a complete doubling-down the effects from 6→3; to the best of my knowledge, this is achieved for the very first time. Also, a triple Dombrovskis and multi-phase change of play with thematic defenses acting as try refutations.
Reducing the number of needed effects typically makes the realization of the Shedey-Lacny much harder. I created quite a few examples with the reduction from 6→5 or 6→4. For over a couple of decades it has been a long-standing goal to find a correct matrix with the complete doubling down reduction 6→3. This composition finally achieves it and from the conceptual point of view, it is probably my very best Shedey-Lacny mechanism.
A threefold Shedey-Lacny combined with a multi-phase change of play that includes a double Zagoruiko and a plenty of Dombrovskis effects.
Thematic tries 1 and 3 and the solution — Zagoruiko 1+2+2 after 1...pxc3(a) and 1...pxd3(b).
The set play, thematic try 2, and the solution — Zagoruiko 1+2+2 after 1...rc1(c) and 1...nd2(d).
A threefold Shedey-Lacny combined with a cyclic pseudo Le Grand, black corrections, and Dombrovskis effects in a light position with a flight-giving key and no black pawns.
A threefold Shedey-Lacny combined with black corrections, and a transformation from secondary to primary Dombrovskis effects in a light position with no white pawns (and only one black pawn).
Two pairs of reciprocally changed white second and third moves.
A threefold Shedey-Lacny, a complete 3×3 cycle of white threatening and mating moves, 3× threefold cyclic pseudo Le Grand, Dombrovskis, Hannelius, Dombro-Hannelius, Zagoruiko, flight-giving try and key, and a plenty of changed mates (3× Ruchlis).
The 3×3 cycle of white threatening and mating moves is also a complete 3×3 pseudo Shedey-Lacny with 6 different black defenses (d), (c), (a), (b), (j), (i) (∼CdAcB,∼BaCbA,∼AjBiC).
3× Ruchlis type mate transfer (each of the three white thematic mates 2.Pf4(A), 2.Ng6(B), and 2.Qe6(C)), is Ruchlis transferred)
– tries 3 and 4 — (dA;dD,bA)
– try 2 and the solution — (iB;iC,jB)
– try 4 and the solution — (aC;aB,bC).
A threefold Shedey-Lacny combined with a quadruple Dombrovskis, Zagoruiko, and an overall multi-phase change of play.
Thematic tries 1 and 2 and the solution — Zagoruiko 3×1 after 1...nxc4(b) (overall, Zagoruiko 1+2+2 after 1...rb7(a) and 1...nxc4(b) in tries 1 and 2 and the solution).
A threefold Shedey-Lacny combined with a threat form Zagoruiko 4+4+2, a quadruple variant of Theme A, three pairs of threat-separating defenses, anti-Barnes theme, and a multi-phase change of play with secondary/primary transformations of Dombrovskis effects.
Threat-separating threat form of Zagoruiko 4+4+2 (3+3+2 after thematic defenses 1...rxg4(a), 1...bxe4(b), and 1...nxd2(c) plus two different threats (2.Nf6(B) and 2.Be6(A)) in tries 1 and 2).
Three pairs of threats separations; 1) the separation between Shedey-Lacny thematic defenses 1...rxg4(a) and 1...bxe4(b); 2) the separation between additional thematic defenses by nf3, 1...nxd2(c) and 1...ng5(d); and 3) the separation between the refutations of thematic tries 1 and 2, 1...bf5(e) and 1...nd4(f) on the one side and the refutation of the additional try 1.Kxb7?, 1...rc1(g), on the other side.
An Adabashev combination of strategic duel between nf3 cross-connected battery (bd1/nf3/Kh5) and pinning (Qg2/nf3/ke4) systems and white pawn annihilations, lines clearances, and different maneuvering of the two key pieces (Nh3 and Bd7), ultimately complemented by a two phase compressed complete Ruchlis change of play. Logical tries introduce two types of maneuvering mechanisms for each of these two key pieces, the switchback and the continued attack. Both types fail in logical tries but the continued attack ones do materialize as extended threats separators in the additional try 1.Pxe5?, and both, the switchback and the continued attack ones, appear as full-length variants in the solution. The switchback ones are combined in a reciprocal way to annihilate white pawns on f4 and f5 and clear the black king masked lateral/diagonal passages for queen and bishop. Transferred and changed continuations of play between the additional try and the solution result in a complete compressed Ruchlis with one half of it being of the Ideal Ruchlis type.
A collection of various works with thematic content ranging from logical/strategic to more modern. for which the solutions/analyses will be presented separately. Figuring out the content of these problems without analyses being presented might be even more enjoyable
