TRADITIONAL TAEKWONDO
TRADITIONAL TAEKWONDO
Here at MTA our traditional Taekwondo is a full Taekwondo program. This is for ages 5 and up. No experience necessary to start. This includes kicking, punching, blocks, forms (patterns of movements), self defense, sparring, breaking boards, and the mental side of training that includes discipline, respect, self-control, confidence, etc.
Our white belts focus on the basics, learning how to throw basic kicks, blocks and punches. They will learn self defense based on scenarios, which are based on real life situations. They will learn self-control, discipline, respect for peers, build confidence, and learn how to work with others.
We are mainly an ITF school, however we also teach some of the WT (formerly WTF) forms, along with some TSD style forms for our black belts. Students will learn one form per belt during the first two years of their training, and more will be added over time after two years. Our forms training focuses on not only learning the patterns, but learning the practical applications behind the moves. We maintain a high standard for our forms, and expect our students to uphold this stanard. For those interested in competition, we also compete on multiple circuits, from grass roots up through international level competition. MTA has had multiple students on the AAU National Traditional Forms Team, including Master Kristin Waterman who has been a member of the team since it started four years, and been named Athlete of the Year twice.
Our self defense are based on real life scenarios, utilizing different types of attacks and scenarios, coming from multiple directions. We teach all our self defense in a controled environment, with the focus on proper technique and awareness, building confidence and muscle memory through repetition and different drills.
For sparring we wear protective/safety equipment, and all sparring is monitored by the instructor. Students will learn the continuous, or olympic style sparring, and also point style sparring. Our school participates in competitions from grass roots levels up through international level competition. Our school has been heavily involved with AAU over the last few decades, including running Indiana AAU State Championships for almost a decade. We also have had students on the national team for olympic sparring, and have competed oversears representing USA.
Our belt system is simple, as we have 10 levels of colored belt and then we go in to the black belt reanks. We offer color belt tests every four months, and black belt tests every six months. Color belts are required to have six stripes on their belt to be eligible to test. All students are required to have a certain amount of training hours to be eligable to test, too.
