For life-threatening medical or psychiatric emergencies, folx should call 911 for immediate assistance. However, calling 911 (even if you are only requesting an ambulance) usually results in police involvement; this is often traumatizing and can have short and long term impacts on different people.
These hotlines can provide alternatives to police intervention and avoid the use of police in most cases. Some utilize other first responders such as mobile crisis units with mental health professionals, who are mandated reporters. It’s always a good idea to ask all hotlines about policies before disclosing information that could lead to an involuntary intervention.
