There are a core set of aspects that must be carefully considered when creating a makerspace. These can greatly influence the outcome of the created space and all resources within them.
- Time - It is a huge commitment to get this program running, and even more to sustain it. One must be aware of the time commitment to such an intensive program.
- Materials and Supplies - While the supplies do not have to include fancy technology, it is generally the norm. Here is a list of supplies that are seen in various makerspaces:
- Space - Libraries that have an abundance of space can create a bigger makerspace; however, there are other options for libraries with less space. Traveling makerspaces and carts with supplies (like seen in the infographic above) are a great option for libraries with minimal space.
Funding - This is arguably the most important aspect to consider in makerspaces as some of the tools and equipment are expensive to purchase, maintain, and secure.
