A Background guide is written by Model UN students and it is crucial to read in order to get an understanding of your topic as well as the debate that is going to take place. It helps to read this paper more than one time and is very helpful in beginning your research. Your background guides contain short summaries of your country's positions, helpful links specific to your country, and links pertaining to the topic as a whole. This paper is meant to guide you in the right direction not only for writing your papers and speeches, but also the debate. Check the "Committees" tab to find yours!
A position paper is a three-paragraph essay outlining the situation as a whole (paragraph 1), the situation in your specific country (paragraph 2), and solutions that your country would agree with (paragraph 3). The third paragraph of this paper is very similar to what your speech should look like. Start by completing the "Guided Questions: Position Papers" and use the other resources below as needed to complete your paper.
At the beginning of a conference, the Chairs will ask the delegates to raise their hands to get on a speakers list. Getting on this list and delivering a speech is important in order to share what your country's beliefs are and to make some allies to work with later on. During your speech, it is best to focus on the solutions your country wants to see debated during the conference and is anywhere from 45 seconds to a minute. Click below to see how to write a speech!
The resources below will be very helpful in further elaborating on what this debate should look like on conference day ("Flow of Debate"). The "Conference Guide" button will bring you to a document that is meant to help with all things that you may need to prepare for the conference in terms of research, formatting + writing your paper, and speeches. Finally, "How to Write A Resolution" is a very helpful template that will come in handy during the conference when it comes time for you and fellow delegates to write a solution to then be voted on towards the end of the conference.
