I’m the landscape horticulturist. So, I’m the guy in charge of all the trees and shrubs on the campus. I’ve worked here, going on, I want to say twelve years, which is the longest I’ve ever worked in one place. I have three girls, one’s about to graduate UNH in French and Women’s Studies and Mass Communication. One is a sophomore at the Maine College of Art and then one just made up her mind as of three days ago to go to McGill for flute. So yes, I live through three teen girls. It was great when they were young. So, part of what I, I’m in charge of all the trees and shrubs, I maintain the database of all of the trees that we maintain, it’s about 2400 trees. I do some landscaping work, I plant all the flowers, I help the athletic guys maintain the athletic fields. I teach a winter term class every other year called trees and the urban forest – which is a blast – students are twice as smart as I am.
A story about anything that comes to mind. It can be an interest that you have outside of your job here, a passion, a dream. It could be a little bit more about who you are as a person, what makes you happy?
When I’m at home, I also garden and landscape at my own house. My wife and I, she is a cook in the catering kitchen, down in Atwater. She went to school for historic preservation out in Nebraska. And about 20 years ago, we bought an old little post and beam, little farm house that dates to 1825 and she’s been telling me what to do for 20 years to restore it, room by room. And then of course, I tell her what to do on the landscape. So, there’s a real clear line, who’s in charge of which part. So, in my free time, we’re working on a house. I’m starting to redo things I did wrong the first time. It sits right at the base of snake mountain. So, we hike up that quite a bit. Do you live in that home? Yup. It’s cute, it’s small. It’s not a farmhouse, it’s the farm hands house to the big farm that was up the road - it’s old. It leans in the center and drops about a foot. So, when the girls were real young, they would take a little plastic ball in the kitchen and let it go at the wall and then chase it as it rolled towards the center of the house, because the house leans and drops… it’s old. So that’s basically what we do in our free time. That and now we get to go, we have one kid, is just right outside of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, which is a great town. And one lives right in Portland, Maine. So, it’s fun to go to both those places. And then one is about to be in Montreal, so that’s cool.
