The Mid-Island Community Bands (MICB) is a group of like minded musicians who gather at regular weekly intervals from September through May to play and perform music. A great deal of time and effort by the board and the director go into providing music, training, and arranging performances. In particular, the director is focused on providing the MICB the benefit of their expertise, giving all players the opportunity to play a wide range of music in various styles and to increase their knowledge and skill at weekly rehearsals.
In order to ensure everyone gains the maximum benefit and enjoyment from rehearsals and shows, all members of the MICB need to follow our expectations:
All members shall be treated with respect.
To get the most from rehearsals, members need to find time to practice music and instrument technique on their own. Be independent in learning repertoire. Sectionals may be scheduled outside of regular rehearsals.
Effort should be made to attend all rehearsals and shows. Should one need to miss a rehearsal or show, contact the director and the email contact as soon as possible.
Arrive at rehearsals and concert venues in time to help with set-up/clean-up. Access to the rehearsal room is 25 minutes prior to rehearsal; downbeat at 6:15 pm.
When the director stops a piece of music to work on a passage with a section or individual, remain quiet so all members can hear the input. This includes refraining from side discussions, tuning, and general noodling on your instrument.
Limit conversation and questions about the music during rehearsals. Extended discussions and questioning are not relevant to all players and are not a good use of time. They should be saved for outside of rehearsal.
Avoid use of perfumes and other strong odor causing compounds. Many people are sensitive to this.
It is expected that all members will pay dues on time and in full. Should a member have financial difficulties, they can approach the MICB treasurer for options.
Should it be necessary to talk with any member regarding unacceptable behaviour, there will be a one-on-one with a member of the board. If this does not correct the unwanted behaviour, other steps may be taken up to and including dismissal from the band.
