Mid-Islands Community Bands is composed of two bands: the Mid-Island Community Concert Band and the Mood Swings Dance Band. The two configurations allow us to play a wide variety of music - and some members choose to play in both bands. Our membership is made up of an interesting cross-section of people, ranging from teens to seniors in the mid island region, many of who have formed lasting friendships.

The concert band welcomes all people to join who have had at least several years of learning on their instrument. The band performs for Remembrance Day, Christmas and outdoor venues in the spring. Annually the band performs inviting high school bands to join us for a fun and inclusive massed band experience.

Mood Swings Dance Band is a Nanaimo BC community Jazz Big Band. Our members range in skill level from high school jazz musicians and advanced amateur players to very experienced individuals who play in multiple bands. The band enjoys entertaining for parties and community events, with dance music from the 1920’s to the 2020’s.

The Bands was founded in 1986 by Ted Dawe. In the summer of 2019, the name changed to 'Mid-Island Community Bands' and was created as society under the British Columbia Societies Act. Jill Mont and Rick Becker are the current conductors.

Vision
The Mid-Island Community Bands Society will connect our larger community through music. It will:
Provide an opportunity for community members to connect socially through music;
Unite members of our community, from youth to adult, through their common love of music;
Preserve the rich history of live band music through community involvement and performance; and,
Continue to inspire life-long learners through music.
