Overview
Understanding basic mechanisms underlying normal and diseased human brain developments crucially depends on reliable knowledge of its anatomical microstructure and connectivity. Our long-term goal is to estimate microstructural properties non-invasively in living subjects using biophysical models of the MRI signal.
We are developing novel methods for fusion of high-resolution quantitative MRI (qMRI) to enable MRI-based in vivo histology (hMRI) in the brain and spinal cord. The main focus is to develop valid MRI metrics that characterize key white matter microstructure properties as known from ex vivo histology (e.g. myelin density, fiber density, and the g-ratio, i.e. the ratio between inner and outer fiber diameter).

The ERC project “MRStain - Non-invasive staining of tissue microstructure in temporal lobe epilepsy using in- vivo MRI” has started, and the first PhD candidates have been selected. But, we are constantly interested in new lab members - do not hesitate to contact us.

Our Microstructure MRI group is based at the University of Lübeck (here).
We are part of the Institute of Neuroradiology, UKSH-Lübeck, and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), Institute for System Neuroscience.
We closely collaborate with the Neurophysics group at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Science, Leipzig (affiliated), the MR Physics group at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin (affiliated), and the Physics group at the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging, UCL, London.
Additionally, we contribute to the development of the hMRI toolbox and the ACID toolbox.
