You are holding a small card, or an email, with a long code on it. You know it has something to do with Word, Excel, and the rest of Microsoft 365, but you are not sure where the code goes or what happens next. That is a very common spot to be in, and the answer is easier than it looks. This guide walks you through redeeming your product key from start to finish, in plain words, at whatever speed feels comfortable.Â
Redeeming a key means telling Microsoft, “this code now belongs to my account.” You sign in, type the code once, and your subscription is saved to your account. After that, you download the apps and sign in. You never need to type the code again.
The page for this is Microsoft365.com/setup, and it is free to use. Our help is optional and comes up later in this guide.
Not everyone does, so it is worth a quick check before you start.
You have a card or a code from a shop or a seller. Yes, you need to redeem it.
You bought a subscription on Microsoft’s own website while signed in. It is usually already linked to your account. You can go straight to downloading the apps.
Your work or school gave you access. You normally sign in with your work or school account instead, and no key is involved.
If you are unsure, look for the code in the box or in your purchase email. If you can find it, you most likely need this guide.
Spend two minutes on this and the rest goes smoothly.
Your product key. It has 25 letters and numbers, usually shown in five groups of five.
A Microsoft account. An email ending in outlook.com, hotmail.com, or live.com works, and so does any other email you have used to create an account. You can also make a new one during the process.
A steady internet connection. The apps are downloaded after you redeem the key.
A device with some free space. Office needs a few GB.
A quiet few minutes. There is no need to hurry.
A small tip: pick the account you plan to keep for years. Your subscription lives in that account, so it is the one you will use whenever you reinstall.
Open the page. Type Microsoft365.com/setup into your browser. It takes you to Microsoft’s page for redeeming a key.
Sign in. Use your Microsoft account. If you do not have one, choose the option to create a new account and follow the short steps.
Type your key. Enter the 25 characters carefully. Dashes are not required. If you copy the key from an email, check that no extra space came along at the beginning or the end.
Pick your country and language. If the page asks, choose the region where you bought the product.
Confirm. Follow the last prompts on the screen. When you see a message that your product has been added, the key has done its job.
Screens change from time to time, so a button may have a slightly different name. The order stays the same: sign in, enter the key, confirm.
Redeeming is only the first half. To start using the apps:
Go to your Microsoft account and open Services and subscriptions.
Find your Microsoft 365 or Office product in the list.
Choose Install and download the file.
Open the file and let it finish. It can take several minutes, so a little patience helps.
Open Word or Excel and sign in with the same account you used to redeem the key.
To confirm everything worked, open an app, click File, then Account, and look under Product Information. It should show your product name and say that it is activated.
Most delays come from small, easy-to-fix things:
Mixing up look-alike characters, such as the letter O and the number 0, or the letter I and the number 1
Signing in to a different Microsoft account than the one you meant to use
Choosing a country that does not match where the key was bought
Stopping after redeeming and forgetting to install the apps
Starting the install while an older version of Office is still on the computer
If any of these sounds familiar, you are in good company. Each one has a simple remedy, listed next.
The key is not accepted.
Re-type it slowly, one group at a time, and compare the look-alike characters. Check the country setting, too.
It says the key was already used.
It may already be attached to another account of yours. Try signing in with any other email addresses you use and look at the subscriptions there. If you bought the key from a seller, you can ask them about it.
You do not see your product after signing in.
You are probably signed in with a different account than the one used for redeeming. Sign out and try your other emails.
The page is slow or will not load.
Try another browser or a private window, close extra tabs, and check your internet connection.
Office says it is unlicensed after installing.
Sign out of the app, then sign in again with the account that holds the subscription.
The installation seems stuck.
Restart the computer, free up some space, remove any old Office version, and try again.
Plenty of people are happy to follow these steps by themselves, and the Microsoft page costs nothing to use. Others feel more at ease with someone beside them, and that is fine too.
We are an independent website, and alongside these free guides we also offer optional guided help. You tell us what you need, we share the price before you pay, and we start only after you say yes. You always enter your own details yourself, and we simply guide you through each step at your pace.
