Microsoft 365 is a popular productivity suite that gives you access to essential applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and more. Whether you’re setting up a new computer or installing Microsoft 365 for the first time, the process is straightforward on both Windows and Mac.
How to Set Up Microsoft 365 on Windows
Follow these steps to install and activate Microsoft 365 on a Windows PC.
Open a web browser on your Windows computer and go to the official Microsoft 365 website. Sign in using the Microsoft account associated with your Microsoft 365 subscription.
If you purchased Microsoft 365 using a different Microsoft account, make sure you sign in with the account connected to your subscription.
After signing in, look for the option to install Microsoft 365 or the Office desktop applications.
Select the installation option to begin downloading the Microsoft 365 installer.
Once the download starts, save the installation file to your computer. Depending on your browser, it may appear in your Downloads folder.
Open the downloaded installer when the download is complete.
Windows may ask for permission to run the installer. Select Yes if prompted.
The Microsoft 365 installation process will then begin. Keep your computer connected to the internet while the required applications are downloaded and installed.
The installation time can vary depending on your internet speed and computer performance.
Once installation is complete, open an application such as Microsoft Word or Excel from the Start menu.
You may be asked to sign in again. Enter the Microsoft account associated with your Microsoft 365 subscription.
After signing in, Microsoft 365 should automatically verify your subscription and activate the installed applications.
Open Word or Excel and check that the product is activated. You can then start creating and editing documents.
How to Set Up Microsoft 365 on Mac
Installing Microsoft 365 on a Mac is also simple. The overall process is similar, although the installation file and interface may look different from Windows.
Open Safari, Chrome, or another browser on your Mac and visit the official Microsoft 365 website.
Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your subscription.
After signing in, select the option to install Microsoft 365 apps.
The Microsoft 365 installer package will download to your Mac, usually into the Downloads folder.
Locate the downloaded Microsoft 365 installer and open it.
Follow the instructions displayed on your screen to start the installation.
Continue through the installation prompts. macOS may request your Mac administrator password before allowing the applications to be installed.
Enter the required credentials and allow the installation to finish.
After installation, open Finder → Applications and locate Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook.
Open any application to begin the activation process.
When prompted, sign in using the Microsoft account connected to your Microsoft 365 subscription.
Microsoft will verify your subscription, and the applications should become activated automatically.
