Lab Facilities

The primary functions of the Microbial Exposomics Laboratory facilities are to 1) process and prep microbiome samples for sequencing, and 2 ) perform in vitro experiments on bacterial cultures.

Space

The physical (wet) lab is located within the University of Iowa College of Public Health laboratory suite in the Oakdale Multi-Tenant Facility.

The lab consists of two rooms with a combined footprint of approximately 1,100 square feet. One room is for sample processing, DNA extraction, and bacterial culturing, and one is for DNA replication and library prep for sequencing.

The processing room includes a biosafety cabinet for BSL2 samples, a chemical safety cabinet for volatile reagents, an anaerobic culturing chamber, incubators, centrifuges, and homogenizers, as well as several bench-top workstations, refrigerators, and freezers for sample and reagent storage.

The library prep room has several bench-top workstations, refrigerators, freezers, and the necessary equipment for DNA purification, replication, quantification, and visualization.

The College of Public Health laboratory suite also includes multiple shared equipment rooms for large equipment like autoclaves, as well as additional office space for Dr. Eggers and her laboratory staff.
