Hi, I'm Miss Dec! I am a high school English teacher in a northwest suburb of Chicago. I have spent all of my teaching years at Hampshire High School, and I am proud to be a Whippur. I attended Illinois State University where I majored in English and minored in Spanish. While all of my clinical hours took place in a high school setting, I wanted to have the full experience and chose to teach in a middle school since I would be licensed to teach grades 6-12. A few other factors landed me at HHS, and I have taught both English and Spanish as well as a few electives in my time teaching.
I primarily teach English classes now. I currently teach Honors English 9 and Advanced Blended English 11. I have always enjoyed the English 11 curriculum because American Literature is the most interesting to me. However, I love grammar and writing even more than reading.
My 6th grade English teacher Mrs. Cramer is the reason that I wanted to become a teacher. I wanted to instill the same passion that she had for diagramming sentences into my own students. Little did I know that diagramming sentences would merely be a thing of the past. Not only that, but students are able to find any information they are looking for at any time with just a few keystrokes while I was stuck trying to find time to go to the library to look for information in an old set of encyclopedias.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching. I love watching my students arrive at an answer or realization. There is nothing better than reading the end of chapter 2 of The Great Gatsby and reviewing literary criticism about Fitzgerald's social commentary with students. There is nothing better than hearing that the SAT writing practice that we did really did help students perform better on the test. There is nothing better than a student telling you that they enjoyed your class, got into the college they wanted to be accepted to, and are following their dreams which came to be in your English class.
And to think...this all begins with purposeful instructional design. That is a powerful thing.
