Personal Diversity Statement
Diversity has many different meanings to it. As it could be a group of people who are from different races or culture that comes together. Or has a different religious background. To me, diversity is like exploring other cultures. It is important to expand our minds to learn about other cultures. There are so many cultures in the world that impact the way they view the world. Not everyone is going to have similar views. I am born into a Catholic family. As a Catholic, I learn from middle school that there is different kind of religion and how they worship God. There was so much to learn about others, the ways they dress, their culture, and their perspective. The aspect of diversity that is important to me is others' views. When attending one of the college hours at FPU, they started with music and then had a speaker. It is interesting to hear about people's opinions on a certain topic. If they think the same or kindly differently. It brings excitement to know what they are going to say. It is also interesting how their culture, religion, etc. may influence their decision on whether they agree or not on a topic. A decision that demonstrates my commitment to diversity is expanding my knowledge and having an open mind. Since attending Fresno Pacific University which is a Christian university. I notice how different the environment is; there are so many friendly staff and college students. When attending one of the college hours, they started with music and then had a speaker. It was a whole different environment from attending a Catholic church. The speaker never mentions Jesus but God. The speaker was very inspiring with her words. In a Catholic church, we follow the book, and the priest mentions Jesus' name. It was a whole different environment learning two different religions. I met someone who dresses differently because of religion and there is a certain music they are not allowed to hear. Learning about this helps me understand and be more aware. The message from the bible supports a robust vision of diversity to unite others from diverse cultures and backgrounds. My faith informs my understanding of diversity from a unique perspective. The type of values that others have from their background. What I appreciate about the diversity of Fresno Pacific University is learning about the culture and the people in the community. It helps expand my knowledge of what a Christian community is like. The several types of people from different countries and their opinions. I like how they welcome everyone and are very friendly.
