Hello whoever is reading this! I am Michael Meheen. I am on my way to becoming an Elementary PE teacher! I'm so excited. I have always loved coaching and teaching elementary schoolers. I feed off people's energies, which means I get an infinite amount of energy when I'm around kids! I played sports throughout my life and my biggest inspiration my career was my old wrestling coach, Russ Shugars. He was also my elementary school PE teacher. He would tell me that teaching elementary schoolers in the morning and then coaching high school wrestling in the afternoon gave him a sort of balance; a sort of yin and yang with chaotic mornings and more disciplined afternoons.
Now enough about my love for teaching, you want to know me outside the educational setting. Well, where do I even start? I love traveling and exploring new places...but that's not enough. I recently discovered a new passion of mine...Backpacking! It is the perfect combination of being outside, traveling to new places, and exploring. My girlfriend and I try to go out every other weekend on a weekend excursion and we are hoping to backpack through the El Camino Trail in Europe sometime in the next few years and the Pacific Coast Trail, which goes from the bottom of California to the top of Washington, at some point in our lives.
A big thing in my life, that I am very open and honest about, is that during the year 2023, I suffered from depression. I didn't want to go outside. I lost interest in things I used to enjoy. I had no motivation to do anything really. Ever since the new year of 2024, I have been telling myself "New year, New me" and it has been working. I tell this brief story because mental health has become a big part of my personality and I don't want anyone to struggle through what I went through alone.
I created a workout club at the University of Redlands called the Murph Club. I first started it as a way to get experience coaching friends in workouts, but over time the club has changed. It has become a safe haven for people to work out and just be who they are. Every Friday we host a Murph event(a big workout) where people from all over the school come to join. At the last Murph event before my senior year's spring break, I had a student tell me afterward, "This was the most fun [he's] had working out in a while." He had just broken up with his girlfriend and needed a place to vent. During the workouts, I am encouraging and I ask everyone individually how they are doing and what is going on in their lives. I know I have prevented at least three people in the spring of 2024 from falling into a depression. This club has taught me advertising skills, social skills, fundraising skills, and most importantly on-the-job teaching skills.
With all that being said, you are probably still thinking, "Who is this guy?" I just described a few aspects of my life, but you are never going to truly know me unless you meet me in person. If you want to know anything about my life, give me a call, shoot me a text, send me an email, or even DM me over Instagram. I will answer anything and I try to respond as soon as possible. I love silly out-of-the-box questions too.
Peace,
Michael
