Director, MDRC (2009 - present) - A nationwide nonprofit corporation that independently evaluates the effectiveness of educational and social programs affecting lower income individuals and families.  Chair of the Audit Committee.

Director, Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco (2004 - 2007) - Member of the Audit, Finance and Member Services committees.

Director and Chair, Association of Corporate Counsel (1995 - 2002; chair 2000 - 2001) - The bar association of in-house counsel, now with over 45,000 members from over 10,000 companies in 95 countries. 

Director and Chair, Insert Therapeutics (2000 - 2004) - A Caltech life sciences start-up company that developed processes for the intracellular delivery of chemical and genetic material.

Director and Chair, Encirq (1996 – 2000) - An Internet start-up company based in San Francisco that was focused initially on bank marketing services but whose micro-processing functions were subsequently applied to automobile, cellular phone and other industrial uses.

Director, SKOLAR (1996 - 1998) - A medical information company initiated by Stanford. 

Outside Director and Vice-Chair, Silicon Valley Bancshares and Silicon Valley Bank (1994 – 1998) - At the time, approximately $35 billion in assets; member of the audit and the compensation committees.

Sloan Foundation scholarship, Minneapolis Tribune award and William Randolph Hearst Foundation awards.
