Doug Chiang is a renowned concept artist and production designer, best known for his work with Lucasfilm, particularly on Star Wars. He currently serves as Vice President and Executive Creative Director, playing a key role in shaping the visual identity of modern Star Wars films, series, and projects. Chiang began his career at Lucasfilm in the late 1990s, working under George Lucas on Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Episode II – Attack of the Clones, where his visionary designs helped bring the prequel trilogy’s distinct worlds to life. His art style and attention to detail earned him a reputation as one of the foremost artists in the film industry.
Outside of his work with Star Wars, Doug Chiang also embarked on a personal project, Robota. A visually stunning and intricate science fiction story, Robota blends ancient and futuristic elements in a world where humans, robots, and mysterious beings coexist. Chiang initially envisioned Robota as a multimedia project—a novel, a game, and eventually a movie. He published Robota: Reign of Machines with author Orson Scott Card, blending his extraordinary art with a rich narrative. The book features Chiang’s strikingly original designs, from massive robots to lush, imaginative landscapes, showcasing his unparalleled artistic talent.
Doug Chiang dreamed of turning Robota into a film. With the help of friends and myself, he crafted two short demo trailers to bring his vision to life, I worked on creating 3D models based on his artwork, a stone head and large stone columns. Though the project has yet to materialize into a movie, Robota remains an impressive example of Chiang’s artistic ambition and storytelling prowess, underscoring his passion for blending art and narrative into immersive experiences. Doug gave me a copy of the book and signed it:
"Thanks for your help making this possible, may the force be with you always! Doug"
The book: Academy award winning artist Doug Chiang and best-selling sci-fi author Orson Scott Card join forces for an extraordinary publishing adventure: Robota. An original illustrated science fiction novel, Robota follows the fortunes of a strangely powerful amnesiac named Caps as he navigates an ancient, decaying world in which a dwindling human population battles a society of merciless robot warriors. Aided by talking animals and stalked by terrifying hunter robots, Caps slowly rises to fulfill an awesome destiny. Integrating word and image, Card's masterful storytelling is interwoven with 75 pieces of Chiang's wildly imagined, meticulously rendered art. Packaged in a dramatic metallic case, this unusual and powerful collaboration is tailor-made to thrill.
