In 2001, my 13 years of professional experience in 2D, and 3D digital media, and design were formally evaluated and recognized as equivalent to a 4-year American bachelor’s degree in Graphic Arts, as there were no Game Art degrees taught then. This evaluation was conducted by Seattle University at the request of George Lucas, facilitated through LucasFilm, to ensure alignment with U.S. academic standards.
The degree equivalency process considered my extensive industry contributions, leadership roles, and expertise in areas such as environment art, design principles, and technical execution. This recognition has been instrumental in my career, enabling me to secure professional roles and visas in countries including the USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, India, the Czech Republic, and China. It reflects the depth and breadth of my professional skills and formalizes my experience as meeting or exceeding academic benchmarks.
Additionally, the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA)—a leading authority on graphic design standards—provided a formal letter of endorsement for my qualifications. In their statement, AIGA emphasized that my experience aligns with the educational standards typically required for professionals in the graphic design field. They noted that my background met the benchmark of a bachelor’s degree, further validated by their survey findings and industry standards.
These recognitions not only validate my career achievements but also highlight the trust and support of esteemed organizations and individuals in the industry. From Seattle University’s evaluation to AIGA’s endorsement, my qualifications have been acknowledged as both academically and professionally equivalent to a traditional degree. These validations underscore the credibility of my expertise and my lifelong commitment to creative excellence.
Now with 34 years of experience, I have taught at three iconic universities and served as the Head of a Game Art and Animation department, continuing to contribute to and inspire the next generation of creative professionals.
"Mr. Cottam's professional experience, summarized, presents a significant employment record in computer graphics of over thirteen (13) years. During this time, he developed proficiency in information technology and computer graphics, and progressed to more difficult and responsible duties, covering a diversity of applications and hardware. In my opinion, his professional employment record presents at least four years of university-level credit towards a major in computer graphics. Accordingly, it is my opinion that Mr. Cottam has the equivalent of a bachelor's degree in computer graphics from an accredited college or university in the United States. Furthermore, his training and work experience provide him with the theoretical and practical application of the knowledge required in the practice of computer graphics."
Michael was an exceptional lead artist when I was working with him at EA. He relayed meeting info to all the object artists allowing them to continue working without distractions. This lead to us completing our tasks months ahead of schedule. He's also a positive influence to the whole team.
My time working at THQ studios was made all the more exciting and engaging thanks to Michael Cottom and his amazing support of my abilities. Thoughtful, friendly and always supportive, Michael not only demonstrated his excellent and professional work ethic via his dedication, but also by being a first-class mentor and lead. I can honestly say, any studio would benefit by having a talented individual with the experience and drive that Michael Cottom has the way he can push a team to achieve their very best.
Michael was one of the most talented artists I have come across in my 25 years in the industry. His talent is coupled with an excellent work ethic and I can recommend both him and his work to anyone.
Traditional animation artisan. Inspired by a great tradition but not bound by it. Founder at 2D ACADEMY, DigiPen.
I had the pleasure of meeting with Michael for the first time a few weeks ago, at the DigiPen Redmond campus... and am far richer for the experience! Michael is the consummate professional... extremely knowledgeable, supremely accomplished in CG matters, immediately likeable, artistically talented and without a doubt an ace problem-solver. The students of course love him (as I suspected they would do when I first met him). I therefore have absolutely no reservations whatsoever in recommending Michael for any task or challenge he sets himself. This guy is one in a million folks! (So much so that I placed a piece about him on my personal blog site at http://blog.animaticus.com!)
Michael truly is one of a kind. He is both technical and creative. Michael is incredibly meticulous and fast and a very experienced modeller. He is also an excellent fine artist. I have worked with Michael on developing one of EA's top-selling titles. Michael is also a great team leader. He makes the work environment a wonderful place to be in. It was truly a pleasure to work alongside him.
Michael is a creative problem solver and a great artist. His robotic motion control rig solved the problems of repeatability in an elegant and unconventional way. That sort of talent is a rare thing.
LucasArts, AutoDesk: Inspiring and empowering high-performance teams to collaborate on technical solutions for Film, Game, and VisualFX productions.
Michael is a talented artist and an "out of the box" thinker who will add value to any project. I enjoyed working with him on Gladius, Star Wars Battlefront, and other projects at LucasArts.
I had the honor of working with Michael at LucasArts a few years back on Gladius a game for last generation consoles. He is a talented modeler and always inspired others with his great work. He's extremely dependable and detail oriented often exceeding the expectations of the team. More importantly, Michael is a good guy and always a pleasure to work with.
