21st century learning was a new term for me. However, as I researched this topic more, I realized how wide spread of an idea it is. 21st century learning refers to a wide variety of skills that many believe we should be teaching in classrooms. These skills are designed to prepare students for the ever changing world they are growing up in (Rich, 2010). Bri Stauffer discusses exactly what these skills are in her article for AES Education. Things like collaboration, critical thinking skills, flexibility, and communication are some of the skills 21st century learning focuses on. Karen Cator, a former Department of Education Director, agrees with Stauffer’s ideas in Elizabeth Rich's article from EducationWeek. She believes that students “must develop strong critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills in order to be successful in an increasingly fluid, interconnected, and complex world.” (Rich, 2010). Both Cator and Stauffer defend the basic principles of 21st century learning.
Throughout my research, I found many similar opinions. I must also say that I agree with most of the ideas behind 21st century learning and skills. In my own classroom, I plan to make communication and adaptability central. As a student teacher, I used technology to ensure each student was getting a personalized education which is something I hope to continue. Technology allows us a unique opportunity to give all students exactly what they need. However, I am concerned that technology is leading some educators down a dark path. We must use technology to enhance our teaching, not to replace it. Throwing on a video rather than actually preparing a lesson is not the goal of 21st century learning. As a Kindergarten teacher, I also wonder where 21st century learning stands on teaching proper handwriting skills or letter formation. It will be interesting to see how and when technology takes over the very youngest grades.
