Dr.Betances' Videos: "Read, Read, Read!" & "Lehman College"

11/28/2022

Dr. Samuel Betances amazes his audience and utilizes humor to grab their attention. He utilizes humor to speak about sensitive topics like rape, abuse, racism, poverty, and many areas of injustice. He speaks of his trials and his journey of overcoming them very clearly. He wastes no time speaking nonsense and caters to the audience with his wisdom. His experiences have taught him great lessons, as it does to his audiences, which makes him an awesome motivational speaker.

In the video titled, "Read, Read, Read!", he emphasized to his audience that we must read to increase our vocabulary. We must educate ourselves and build our success, to expand our horizons. We must reject rejection! In order to do so, we must crush the bricks that hold us back! Crush those bricks with books! Increase your word power! His voice fills the room as his encouragement flows throughout the audience.

Along with his very inspirational keynote address at the Lehman College Annual Hispanic Heritage Tribute from the Fall of 2014, he spread again his knowledge of success and great advice. He used his humor to introduce sensitive topics. From his story about being accused of stealing the plane ticket he earned to ride in first class, he said "All you gotta do to be in trouble, is to show up the way God made you". Out of every other passenger, a person of color gets accused first. He brought to attention the injustice he faced in that situation.

I am always amazed by Dr. Samuel Betances's speeches. I find his voice strong and very compelling. I learned from his speeches that education and knowledge are what will get you far in life. He's able to include his audience and get them out of their seats a couple of times to keep them actively attentive. His humor is what gets me to really listen as well. My favorite quote from him was from his speech at Lehman College, in which he said, "If you think you're leading, but look back and see no one is following you. Maybe you're just taking a walk".

"Being a More Confident Public Speaker" by watchwellcast

Public speaking is a very common fear. Being in front of a large audience can make anyone nervous. It is a very normal reaction. Watchwellcast's "Being a More Confident Public Speaker" video on YouTube shares the triple P method. Step one is to "Prepare, prepare, prepare!", meaning to research supporting details before you are asked any questions. Step two is "Posture and physicality", meaning you need proper posture to show you feel confident in your topic and your speech. Natural movement and speaking using your diaphragm to fill the room with your voice. Lastly, step three is to pander to your audience. Crack a joke, and show some of your fun sides to kill the silence. Keep the crowd interested instead of serious.

  • Prepare, prepare, prepare!

  • Posture and physicality

  • Pander to your audience

I feel the tips in this video are very useful. The narrating of the speaker in the video was very enthusiastic, but also very annoying to where I'd rather mute the video and read the subtitles. I feel as though she overdid her enthusiasm and could’ve just toned down a little bit. The lesson she taught, however, is very useful and straight to the point. I like how she didn't complicate the idea of public speaking and made it plain and simple by using just three steps.

Ms.Oliveros' Presentation

9/16/2022

Ms.Oliveros' annual presentation informs us every year about the opportunities offered to us after high school. For three years, she has been checking in on us to ensure our success. She actually shows genuine interest in our success and careers. Reminders about the opportunities such as FAFSA, CLYMER, DCAPS, and NTHS to assist us in our decisions for our further education. Along with reminders about keeping track of our current credits to graduate with our diploma and Certificate of Mastery.

I really appreciate her attitude towards us by being friendly and not pressuring. I appreciate how real she keeps it with us, and at the same time, encourages us to decide to continue further education. She is very easy to talk to and doesn’t shut us down if we don't understand something right away. Along with involving us in her presentation, by using us as examples and grabbing our attention. I genuinely enjoy her presentations as she makes them very easy to listen to.

Dr. Samuel Betances' Presentation

Dr. Betances taught us very wise lessons which I will carry with me as I progress as a person. His words, "If you are not making mistakes, then you are not learning", really stuck with me. I have learned to try and see myself as no less than others even if I am slow. If I am slower than others, or if I am behind, I am not dumb and I am not stupid. I am good enough for myself and I can be good enough for other things I put my mind to.

I was very upset with myself when my eyes shut during Dr. Betances' presentation. The first I see is everyone having their eyes on me, and the next thing I see is Dr. Betances staring into my soul. I was immediately embarrassed and hated what I had done. However, it made me feel relieved when Dr. Betances did not embarrass me at all. Instead of making me a "bad" example, although I was, he made me an example of what he should've been paying attention to. He made everybody else stand and stretch and that just made me feel less embarrassed. I really loved his presentation despite my drowsiness and awful mistake. In my opinion, he really is the best presentation we've had in previous years.

#725 How Do You Choose the Right Leadership Method?

8/31/2022

In the article I read, Mr..Jerry Roberts covers over very useful leadership styles. He shortens it down to five leadership styles including the: Transformational leader; Participatory leader; Value-based leader; Situational leader; Servant leader; and lastly Mr.Jerry Roberts own, G.U.A.M model. The first five he shortens it down to small paragraphs. Transformational leaders are leaders who can connect their members values to the general value of the team. The Participatory leader encourages their members to voice their OWN opinions towards the team's value and function. The Value-based leader is very loyal to where the team started, and stays loyal to the first value. The Situational leaders are ones who can match their team in behavior, in tactics, and keeps up to date with their attitudes. Lastly, the most selfless of all, the Servant leader is one who puts their members above themselves always. The first five he mentions are very good, however, I personally like the G.U.A.M model. He states it as an acronym starting with G for gratitude, U for understanding, A for altitude, and M for motivation.

I was surprised in the introduction to the leadership styles. It shocked me when Mr.Roberts was calling out God for failing his "first" team, Adam and Eve. I agreed when he said "Leadership is tough, even if you're the creator of the universe". Anyone who is a leader is not perfect and they will fail their team eventually at some point. Whenever I see my team leaders at work, I notice how stressed they get and they do make mistakes often. They'll send me to the wrong room and then I'll get in trouble, but they'll take the blame for it in the end. From reading this article, It makes me understand more about what leaders need in order to help their teams reach success.
