Course Outline

The Advanced Higher Biology course has 3 Units:


Unit 1: Cells and Proteins

    • Key Area 1 - Laboratory techniques for biologists

    • Key Area 2 - Proteins

    • Key Area 3 - Membrane Proteins

    • Key Area 4 - Communication and signalling

    • Key Area 5 - Protein control of cell division


Unit 2: Evolution and Organisms

    • Key Area 1 - Field techniques for biologists

    • Key Area 2 - Evolution

    • Key Area 3 - Variation and sexual reproduction

    • Key Area 4 - Sex and behaviour

    • Key Area 5 - Parasitism


Unit 3: Investigative Biology

    • Key Area 1 - Scientific principles and process

    • Key Area 2 - Experimentation

    • Key Area 3 - Reporting and critical evaluation of biological research


Course Assessment

Usually:

  1. Question Paper (3 hours) of 100 marks - this is scaled to 120

  2. Project worth 30 marks - scaled to 40 marks (worth 25% of your overall grade)
