An introduction to the topic of explaining the pattern of ties we actually observe. Two kinds of models are discussed: ERGM and QAP, but only QAP is covered in detail. We will use QAP to test hypotheses about who is tied to whom. For example, we will test for homophily (the tendency for actors to have positive ties with people similar to themselves) and reciprocity (the tendency for people to choose those who choose us).
