What is the McGill Music Graduate Students's Society (MGSS)?

All music graduate students are automatically members of MGSS! By paying student dues to PGSS, you have a right to representation via the MGSS Executive Council, to offer feedback, compliments, and criticism to all policy and procedure enacted on behalf of the music graduate student body, and to access to all events, activities, and support instigated by the MGSS EC!

If you'd like your name and bio added to our "members" page, please send an email to mgss.pgss@mail.mcgill.ca!

What is the MGSS Executive Council?

The MGSS Executive Council is an elected, student-run organization that represents and supports all music graduate students at McGill's Sculich School of Music. For a list of the 2023-2024 representatives, take a look at the "Executive Council" page!

What does the MGSS Executive Council Do?

MGSS organizes events and activities open to all music graduate students throughout the year, including a fall orientation for incoming students, end of term parties, the annual McGill Music Graduate Symposium, trivia nights, and more! These include opportunities to meet and connect with fellow MGSS members just for fun, and opportunities to share research and projects. For more details on upcoming events, please check out the events page, or visit our Facebook and Instagram pages!

One of our crucial roles in the larger Schulich framework is to advocate for the needs and interests of music graduate students, and act as a bridge of communication between students and faculty, staff, and administration. We have representatives at faculty council meetings, regular meetings with the Dean, PGSS, AGSEM, area and departmental meetings, the EDI committee, and various resource committees. Please feel free to voice your ideas, questions, and concerns to any MGSS representative, which you can find on our "Executive Council" page, or to our email: mgss.pgss@mail.mcgill.ca.

MGSS also sends out regular emails and monthly newsletters reminding students about deadlines, informing students about events and initiatives, and generally communicating with students about fun and/or helpful things going on at Schulich or within the Schulich community. If you would like MGSS to share information about an event and/or project you are involved with, just send us an email!

What can I do to get involved?

There are positions both on the MGSS EC, as well as opportunities for acting as an Area Representative, which generally involves less time commitment. We also always appreciate a hand with any of our events or the annual symposium, without necessitating participation on the council. The filling of  vacant positions happens on a rolling basis, but elections for the following year's EC take place in May. If you would like to fill a vacant position on the MGSS EC, or want to inquire about offering labour and/or support for an uncoming event, just shoot us an email or watch out for requests for participation coming from us!

MGSS is a subsidiary of McGill's Post-Graduate Students' Society (PGSS). Our funding primarily comes from graduate student fees paid and dispersed via PGSS.
