MMGS: My Favorite Functions

There are many incredible spreadsheet functions. You may not be aware of what they can do. Let's play around a bit to see what's possible. If you have a use scenario for a function, please don't hesitate to share it with the rest of us.

Let's get started!

My Favorite NonFunctions

Manipulating Data

  • Insert Graphs into Docs

  • Put Graph on Sheets tab

  • Publish to the Web

  • Create and Exporting Comma-Delimited Files (a.k.a. CSV)

Formatting Cells

  • Conditional Formatting

  • Group Rows to Collapse/Expand

Insert Auto-Updating Graph into Docs

Ever wish you could insert a graph or chart that gets auto-updated when you change the data? If so, you can do that with Google Sheets and Google Docs. First, create your Google Sheet and the appropriate chart (See example right).

Now, while I want the graph to appear in a Google Doc, I do not want the original data to appear. To insert only the chart, switch to your Google Doc and then the Insert drop-down menu. Select Chart, then From Sheets, as shown below.

Lunch Choices

Want an example on how to collect information then share it with others? You can find an example below. Get a copy of documents you need.

This takes advantage of one tool (Autocrat) and =Lookup function., as well as Named Ranges.

Reflection Invitation

Allow me to invite you to reflect on what you are learning today. You can use this Jamboard to take notes on three areas:

  • What you've seen today

  • What it means for teaching and learning or your work

  • And what next steps or changes can you make to your work based on those

You can also get a copy of the Google Slides that serves as the template for the Jamboard here.
