Subspecialty: Hematology-Oncology
Dr. Weinstein was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Baltimore and is a graduate of Cornell University and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in Pediatrics at the Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by Fellowship training in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the Children’s Hospital in Boston and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He was the Director of the Pediatric Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Service at Children’s Hospital from 1980 to 1994. In 1996, he returned to the Massachusetts General Hospital as Chief of the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology program. In 2006, he was honored to be selected as the first R. Alan Ezekowitz Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and was a 2016 recipient of the Brian A. McGovern award for Clinical Excellence. His major research is in clinical investigation of the childhood acute leukemias and lymphomas. He has been the principal investigator for many novel clinical trials for children with acute myeloid leukemia, as well as non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphoma. He has a wonderful family including his wife, Ann Hochberg and three children (David and twins Aaron and Rebecca). Dr. Weinstein enjoys tennis, running and biking. He is the founder and team captain of the MassGeneral Marathon Team “Fighting Kid’s Cancer... One Step at a Time”. The team has raised over 12 million dollars to support the Childhood Cancer Program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children. Most recently, he has been involved in the MGH Center for Global Health. He is leading the effort to develop a childhood cancer program in Mbarara, Uganda.
