Hydraulic Ram Pump

Experimental set-up

Overall view of the experimental set-up.

The ram pump is inserted in a closed hydraulic circuit: a constant head in the cylindrical tank is guaranteed by a submersible pump located in the rectangular tank. The ram pump, and the rest of the apparatus are transparent to allow a better visualization and comprehension of the physical phenomenon.

Thanks to the water hammer phenomenon the outflow is discharged around 70 centimeters higher than the water level in the cylindrical tank.

The set-up is only demonstrative and valves are not optimized, but much higher height head differences can be obtained even with small plants.
