Research Highlights

My research area includes Material forming and Joining. Both experimental and computational approaches are attempted to solve problems of interest. For the last many years, we are working on formability of sheets after welding and joining, like laser welded sheets, friction stir welded sheets, and adhesive bonded sheets. We have studied the effect of friction stir welding on the formability of sheets quantified by forming limit, tensile behaviour, strain analyses, cup drawability etc. The same has been predicted by FE simulation and necking criteria, and finally validated for accuracy. Prior to this the formability of laser welded sheets was studied. In the case of adhesive bonded sheets, we have shown that formability can be improved by suitable modification of adhesive properties. The formability of adhesive bonded sheets are quantified by tensile tests, deep drawing, and plane-strain formability tests. We attempted to predict the forming of adhesive bonded sheets by numerical simulations to have an efficient simulation methodology while designing such sheet parts. An equivalent thickness heterogeneity approach and neural network are used for the purpose. In addition to this, Springback investigation of FSW sheets and adhesive bonded sheets are also performed. We have developed an expert system based on neural network to predict the forming of welded sheets at different weld properties, location, orientation, size, at different modes of deformation. Cellular Automata based Finite Element (CAFE) modelling of friction stir welding and forming of such sheets, in collaboration with Tata Steel R&D, India, is an ongoing and newly attempted research contribution. Using CAFE approach, the micro-structural features like grain size, strength, dislocation density etc. of FSW zone are predicted, and pin profile effect has been studied. Recently, we started working on end forming of tubes. In this, novel methods of joining a tube to a sheet, and a pair of tubes using end forming are proposed. End forming (like tube expansion, curling, reduction etc.) of FSPed Aluminium tubes as compared to parent tubes is also examined. Spot welding of sheets is another recent research attempt. In this, friction stir spot welding of polymer core sandwich sheets with Aluminium alloy skin, friction stir form joining of Aluminium alloys, Self-Pierced Riveting (SPR) are investigated. We collaborate with IISc Bangalore and NIT Agartala in FSW and FSSW.
