Students will be grouped in teams of 3 - 5 to promote interactions with the Microbial Fuel Cell. More than 100 students and 6 teachers involved in the Grade 5 classes, Science Club and Eco Club at Westmount Mid-High School will be participating in the challenge for about ten weeks. We have a total of 24 teams this year.
Participants will have the opportunity to promote the growth of microbes in the soil by changing variables like adding compost materials and electrolyte drinks. They can also make changes such as adjusting environmental conditions like temperature. Participants will keep logbooks, recording what they did. The participants will also create a short 3-minute presentation, a format currently used by many post-secondary institutions.
At the end of the challenge, participants will be treated to a fun Pizza Meal where they can celebrate their success and share their learnings. Groups will be asked to present a summary of “What they did?”, “What went well?”, and “What they will do next time?”. 3 Microbial Fuel Cells will be handed out as prizes to top groups. We hope these groups will set up these MFCs and display them in their classrooms to inspire other students.
