Music is a joy that impacts the lives of millions throughout the world. For centuries, music has been an outlet for a multitude of people to express emotions, convey stories, and bring communities together across time and culture. From indigenous tribes to current modern-day artists, music has served as a universal language, bridging cultures, preserving traditions, and inspiring movements across generations.
For nearly 13 years of my life, I (Daniel Song) have dedicated countless hours to the advancement of my expertise in music. What once started as dancing to children's songs at the small age of three, the impact of music in my life has exponentially grown, shaping my discipline, creativity, and emotional expression. I didn’t know it when I was merely dancing to a children’s song, but I had just found a lifelong language that would shape how I experience emotion, navigate hardship, and connect with the world.
Numerous Piano and Cello lessons have aided me in the pursuit of not only musical excellence but also genuine love for the art. The guidance provided by private teachers has allowed me to express raw emotions through the tender touch of a key on the Piano or the rich resonance of a Cello string. Through the genuine love for music that was nurtured by the training from my teachers, I was able to share the joy of music through numerous activities: volunteering at hospitals, accompanying my church choir, and actively participating in numerous roles within the New Trier Music and Theatre Department.
In August of 2024, I went on a mission trip with Gospel Church of Chicago (formerly known as Oneness Church of Chicago) to Mission Cosecha Church in Mexico City, Mexico, where I was greeted by nearly 70 children, full of energy, warmth, and genuine excitement. As a pianist and church accompanist, a big role that I took on during my time at Mission Cosecha Church was singing and playing praise songs for the children. After conversing with individuals at the church, I soon learned that music education was a luxury that was extremely difficult to come by due to their financial circumstances. In addition to the lack of education regarding music, the church and many families around the area lacked the funds to purchase instruments to begin the musical journey that I’ve been fortunate to experience firsthand. Being a successful musician requires two things: the materialistic essentials (like instruments), and the passion for the art of music. The eager children overflowed with the passion and enthusiasm for music, but they lacked the tangible tools needed to express their raw passion and emotion for music. The joy that is brought on by music that connects people all over the world was taken away from these children due to something as unfortunate and preventable as financial barriers.
Driven by the desire to provide these children with the opportunity to cultivate their musical talents and complement their passion for music, I am raising funds to support the children of Mission Cosecha Church by offering financial assistance for instruments and educational opportunities that would otherwise be inaccessible. All proceeds raised in this fundraising recital will be sent to Mission Cosecha Church (through Gospel Church of Chicago) to further the joy that can be experienced through music.
Whether your contribution is big or small, your support helps create real opportunities for the children at Mission Cosecha Church to grow through music. Together, we can open the door to musical education and inspiration!
