[EN] One hundred years after its creation, a collective of artists and musicians from diverse backgrounds has come together to radically reimagine the soundtrack of one of the silent era’s masterpieces—and one of the most influential films of all time: Metropolis.
Based on a compositional concept by Roberto Borin, the ensemble — Francesco Gulic (electronic composition and piano improvisation), Ivan Rongione (electric guitar and synth), Maria Iàiza (acoustic and prepared piano), and Christopher Scherlich (live electronics and live sampling)—has crafted a musical journey with a distinctly postmodern character. Their work intertwines and reveals the use of bold, innovative techniques and musical styles in the realm of live sonorization, aiming to enhance and contemporize the visual, symbolic, and philosophical framework of Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou’s 1927 opus, now available in its complete version, without overshadowing the powerful narrative imagery envisioned by the legendary Austrian director.
Built upon a solid analytical and conceptual structure, the new score gives ample space to instrumental improvisation and free dialogue among the musicians. This melting pot of styles and technical-musical devices is designed to shape each scene with precision, while maintaining a coherent expressive thread that guides the audience through the film’s unfolding drama.
