Nasugbu, located in Western Batangas, boasts the title of the largest municipality by size and second-largest overall. Covering an expansive 27,851 hectares, its name originates from a captivating legend. As the story goes, a Spanish visitor, intrigued by the town's name, mistakenly referenced rice being cooked in a clay pot ("palayok"). Misinterpreting, a local woman replied, "Nasubo na po iyan eh, kaya ganyan" (It's already submerged, that's why it looks like that). The Spaniard shared this tale, forever etching "Nasugbu" into history.
Despite its mysterious origins, written records trace back to the establishment of the Parish of St. Francis Xavier by the Jesuits in 1852. Nasugbu's history intertwines with the lives of laborers under the influence of affluent hacienderos, who held significant control over the town. However, during the Japanese occupation in World War II, Nasugbu showcased unwavering strength and defiance, resisting adversity with remarkable resilience.
Post-War Revival
Following the war, Nasugbu embarked on a journey of recovery, grappling with the challenges of urbanization while gradually restoring its former way of life. In the 1970s, a monumental decision by the hacienderos to sell their vast landholdings catalyzed significant change. This shift led to land redistribution among the local populace, fostering community spirit and growth across Nasugbu's 42 barangays.
Emergence as a Tourism Hub
In 2007, Nasugbu's status as a special tourism zone marked a turning point, as the town's name became synonymous with white sand beach resorts and leisurely retreats. Spearheaded by the Nasugbu eminent persons group, tourism development flourished, drawing attention to breathtaking destinations like Punta Fuego and Mount Palay-Palay, crowned by the majestic Mount Pico de Loro—a magnet for hikers and nature enthusiasts alike.
A Beacon of Beauty and Adventure
Through a remarkable transformation, Nasugbu transcended its agricultural roots to become a vibrant tourist destination. Its pristine beaches and natural wonders have charmed travelers from near and far, establishing Nasugbu as a coveted destination brimming with beauty and adventure.
