Memorial High School notes: Even though there have been a few delays, the opening of two new high schools in Wichita Falls in the autumn of 2024 is on schedule.

Wichita Falls ISD conducted a board meeting on Tuesday and received the most recent school district updates.

Memorial and Legacy appear to be on the same course. The majority of the steel structure and concrete walls have been erected for both new high schools, and they are quite close to completion.

Officials of the WFISD hope to complete the project before winter so they may begin working on the interiors of the buildings when the weather gets chilly. However, similar to many other projects, they are experiencing material shortages, therefore they must manage around the delays.

"It is a constant struggle with materials," stated architect David Potter. "We have been quite fortunate to be able to order materials early on in the project, allowing us to have them in most circumstances. We struggle with not knowing when items will be delivered, but we currently believe that we are on schedule with the materials."

He stated that generally his projects are on a 14-month timetable, thus the fact that they began with a two-year schedule to complete this is advantageous because it allows for delays.

Within the WFISD, the two new high schools will replace the three high schools already in use. Legacy will be accessible from the Henry S. Grace Freeway near Castaway Cove, while Memorial will be accessible from Kell and 369.

Officials from the Wichita Falls Independent School District have unveiled the official colors for the two new high schools, as well as colorized draft versions of the official mascots.

The leopards at WF Legacy High School will have the colors royal blue and gold, while the mavericks of WF Memorial High School will have the colors navy and red. The school system highlighted that the colorful logos released for both schools were preliminary designs created to provide pupils with a visual idea of what the mascot may look like.

WFISD will collaborate with a graphic design firm to establish the final logo design and branding guidelines for both schools. The colors and mascots will also be sent to architects, who will incorporate them into the school designs.

Below is a breakdown of the timing and student vote decisions supplied by the school district.

In September 2021, the school naming committee convened, examined public comments, and chose five mascot options for evaluation by the Board of Trustees. Due to the inability of the majority of the naming committee to attend the selection meeting, the Board of Trustees recommended that the district administration solicit additional opinion through email. All members of the naming committee were sent an email ballot, and 35 of the 40 members responded. The leading names chosen by the naming committee were:

Wichita Falls High School Legacy

Memorial High School, Wichita Falls

Leopards Mavericks \sLegends

Lightning Titans

The Board of Trustees decided 5-1 on December 7, 2021 to reduce the options for student voting to Lions, Leopards, and Falcons for Legacy High School and Mavericks and Titans for Memorial High School.
