Serra de São Mamede

This unique nature reserve was established in 1989 and is one of the most interesting examples of biological diversity in Portugal. The Serra de São Mamede reaches a height of 1025 meters and connects the rolling Alentejo and Extremadura dehesa countryside to the lusher Tagus basin and Sistema Central mountains of Iberia (Serra de Estrela in Portugal, the Sierra de Gredos in Spain). One of the ‘wildest’ regions in Europe, with views stretching over 200km, it’s a perfect habitat for flora and fauna: chestnut trees, cork oaks, vineyards, olive groves and wild fox, wild boar, eagles and vultures, plus Europe’s largest bat colony.

Together with the Sierra de San Pedro across the border, the São Mamede offers a fascinating history of war and conquest: Neolithic tribes, Tartessians, Romans, Moors, Portuguese and Castilians, and 20th-century smugglers, have all left their marks on the landscape. From highlights like Marvão – ‘one of the 1000 places to see before you die’ according to the New York Times Best-Selling Book – and the Roman bridge at Alcántara, the biggest in the world, to more subtle treats like tapas in a gothic chapel in Alburquerque or cocktails at the Flor da Rosa Convent in Crato, Memória/Fun Car Rent enables you to discover a very, very special part of Europe.
