Interdisciplinary Artist / Former Mathematics Teacher (Secondary) / Arts Administrator
Lives and works in Macau and Hong Kong.
Melody Chan(b. Hong Kong, Macao and Hong Kong)roots her practice in the intersection of rational thinking and spiritual inquiry. Holding an MA in Contemporary Art Practice from the Royal College of Art, she approaches art-making as a systematic and contemplative process, drawing inspiration from empirical rigor while embracing the ambiguity of spiritual inquiry.
Her work is reflective of her belief in the harmony between what we could call objective rationality and the general humanistic spirit. Through posing generative questions, and critical analysis, she seeks to uncover the deeper relational structures and logical patterns that emerge between different entities, as well as the aesthetic qualities these interconnections embody. This process allows her to express her spiritual quest and sense of life, blending scientific inquiry with artistic exploration.
She works across a variety of mediums, including installations, paintings, printmaking, digital art, and multimedia videos. However, her primary focus lies not in the physical manifestation of the artwork itself, but in the ideas and concepts that drive its creation. Each piece is a meticulous conceptual exploration, where logic and aesthetics converge.
Through her art, she aims to bridge the gap between the tangible and the intangible, the rational and the spiritual. In this pursuit, she believes that the relentless quest for truth—whether through science, mathematics, or art—is essential to the human experience.
Melody achieved recognition by being selected for the Lumen Prize Longlist, Aesthetica Art Prize Longlist, 99 Future Blue Chip Artist Finalist, and Luxembourg Art Prize Finalist. Past exhibitions and projects include 'Tate Modern Late' at the London Tate Modern, the AR research project and exhibition 'The Arrival of a Train' organised by Snap Inc. and the Royal College of Art, among others.
