As a teacher, I have used this tool to create worksheets, presentations, videos, classroom decorations and basically anything you can imagine!
As a student, I used it to organize my timetable, write summaries of the texts assigned to me and even designed some presentations!
How can you use it for your classes?
It may sometimes be difficult for teachers to work on a project that requires certain materials such as construction paper, markers, etc. What if you didn't have to use any of those and still come up with great productions? Here is an example of an activity...
"Global Adventure: Design Your Dream Vacation"
Destination Selection
Students brainstorm and select a dream vacation destination, considering factors like culture, geography, and personal interests.
Research and Inspiration :
Students conduct research online or using provided resources to gather information and inspiration for their chosen destination.
Creating the Itinerary:
Using Canva, students design an itinerary for their dream vacation, including details such as travel dates, accommodations, and daily activities.
They incorporate images, icons, and text to illustrate each aspect of their itinerary creatively.
Language In Use:
Students write descriptive narratives for each day of their itinerary to describe their planned activities, experiences, and impressions.
Cultural Exploration :
In addition to the itinerary, students create a cultural exploration section in their Canva project, highlighting unique aspects of the destination's culture, cuisine, traditions, and language.
They may include recipes, language phrases, cultural insights, and interactive elements to engage the audience, as they will later present it to their classmates.
Presentations:
Each group presents their dream vacation itinerary and cultural exploration to the class, sharing highlights, insights, and interesting facts about their chosen destination.
Classmates engage in a Q&A session, asking questions and providing feedback on the presentations.
Reflection and Discussion:
Students reflect on the activity, discussing what they learned about their dream destination and the importance of cultural awareness in global travel.
They share any insights or discoveries made during the research and design process.
I asked "ChatGPT" to define itself, and this is what it came up with: ChatGPT, short for "Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer," is a state-of-the-art language model developed by OpenAI. It belongs to the family of Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPT), which are neural network architectures designed for natural language understanding and generation tasks.
How can you use it for your classes?
It may seem that Generative AI could be detrimental to EFL students because it gives them the answers right away. But, what if you taught your students how to use this tool to scaffold their learning and aid them in producing both in oral and written form?
"Learning how to write prompts: A 21st Century useful ability"
Understanding the Purpose: You could explain to students why it's important to formulate clear prompts and emphasize that clear prompts help ChatGPT understand what they're asking for and provide more accurate and helpful responses.
Identifying Key Information: Encourage students to identify the key information they want to convey in their prompts. This may include the topic they're asking about, any specific details or context, and the type of response they're expecting from ChatGPT.
Using Descriptive Language: Teach students to use descriptive language in their prompts to provide as much context as possible. Encourage them to include details such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to help ChatGPT understand the question or instruction.
Providing Examples: Give students examples of both good and poor prompts to illustrate the difference. Discuss what makes each prompt effective or ineffective and how they can improve their own prompts based on these examples.
Practice: Provide students with opportunities to practice formulating prompts. You can give them specific topics or questions to ask ChatGPT about, or you can ask them to come up with their own prompts based on their interests or learning objectives.
Feedback and Revision: Encourage students to review the responses they receive from ChatGPT and reflect on whether their prompts effectively communicated what they were asking for. If not, they can revise their prompts and try again.
Peer Review: you can incorporate peer review activities where students exchange prompts and provide feedback to each other. This can help reinforce the importance of clear communication and provide students with additional perspectives on how to improve their prompts.
Overall, this activity would help EFL students formulate clear and concise language, making them aware of certain features of the language such as inferring, decoding information, etc. This, in turn, will help them produce contextualised accurate language both written and orally.
