Origin of the Full Moon Hash
The origins of Full Moon Hashing
The ‘Original Full Moon Hash’ run was set in San Diego on 17 October 1987, founded by a deranged and sleepless San Diego hasher named John ‘Mr. Spock’ Martin. The idea quickly caught on, spreading round the world, and soon the ‘First UK Full Moon Hash’ was run on 10 March 1990, founded by another deranged San Diego Hasher, ‘Ring Piece’ Pooley, who was running with the Essex Hash, east of London. The ‘disease’ quickly affected Malaysia with the first run of the ‘Kuala Lumpur Full Moon Hash’ on 11 September 1992, founded by Chuck ‘Titanic’ Pollock, yet another deranged San Diego Hasher who had run with the Essex and First UK Full Moon Hashes. Among the first and regular runners with the KL Full Moon Hash was Mike ‘Father’ Lyons, previously On Sec of the Mother Hash and GM of Petaling H3
Full Moon Hashing in Melbourne
Some years later, Mike moved to Melbourne where he ran with several Melbourne Hashes. He proposed the formation of a Melbourne Full Moon Hash and with Phil Vertue, Nick Leicester and his cousin, Bern Lyons , the first run was set on Sunday 25 June 2000, by Mike and Margaret Lyons, from Grant's Picnic Ground into Sherbrooke Forest, with 20 runners.
Founders Guidelines
As an alternative to the tarmac-based, street-bound Melbourne Hashes, it was agreed by the founding Hashers that:
Our name will be the “Melbourne Howlers Full Moon Hash House Harriers”
The runs will be held on the nearest Sunday to the full moon.
The runs will all be in open country — no tarmac.
Run sites should have a BBQ or a friendly pub close by.
All grog will be BYO, but the hares will provide the BBQ facilities.
The runs will be family friendly and hash songs will be sung
Our symbol as commisioned by our first GM Mike Lyons
