The NAF Business Academy offers a well-rounded business education designed to help students excel in their future careers. In the first year, we dive into the fundamentals of marketing and accounting, while the second year focuses on the importance of professional ethics and financial planning. Each class builds on the last, enhancing students’ financial literacy and preparing them for real-world success.
Mission Statement: By providing high-quality instruction, opportunities for community service, shadowing experiences, and internships, we prepare students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in college, their careers, and beyond.
Accounting Project
Principles of Accounting equips students with a comprehensive understanding of the accounting process and its role in supporting decision-making by delivering essential data and information to both internal and external stakeholders. Students explore the integral connection between accounting and various business activities. They also gain hands-on experience with technology, learning to create formulas and input data into spreadsheets. Additionally, the course introduces students to career paths in accounting, along with the professional certifications and designations available in the field.
In my Accounting 1 course through NAF, I was tasked with creating a mock business and preparing the monthly accounting documents necessary for its operation. I designed a restaurant/café concept called "Persephone's Pearls." To develop the transactions, I considered how a business like this generates revenue and the expenses or purchases required to keep it running smoothly. Included is a slideshow highlighting key aspects of my project.
Marketing Project
Marketing provides students with an introduction to the goals, strategies, and tools essential to the field. Students gain insight into every phase of marketing and explore strategies for building business and brand equity, whether for large-scale operations like hotel chains or smaller businesses like restaurants. They learn to evaluate marketing niches, understand customer and consumer needs, and perform basic market research. By examining the advantages and limitations of various marketing channels, students create an integrated marketing campaign utilizing a diverse mix of appropriate channels.
The success of any restaurant relies on its unique concept and marketing strategy, and in my marketing class, I was tasked with creating a mock business to bring these ideas to life. I developed "Persephone's Pearls," a restaurant and café with a cozy bar that serves a fusion of French and Greek cuisine. Inspired by Greek mythology, the business features signature cocktails named after mythological figures and dishes that pay tribute to legendary tales. Below is a presentation showcasing the key aspects of this extraordinary project.
Financial Planning Project
Financial Planning offers students a detailed introduction to the role of a financial planner and the services they provide. The course explores how various aspects of financial planning—such as saving, debt management, and investing—affect individuals and their ability to achieve long-term goals. Students learn the importance of financial planning in areas like retirement, education, homeownership, and managing unexpected expenses. Key topics include saving strategies, borrowing and credit, types of insurance, and investment options like stocks and retirement accounts. Additionally, students examine career opportunities in financial planning, including professional certifications and designations, gaining insights into potential career paths. By the end of the course, students are better prepared to make informed financial decisions and understand the broader role of financial planners.
In Financial Planning, we covered a lot of important topics, from how to save for college to what to look for when applying for credit cards. We also talked about budgeting, managing debt, and making smart financial choices. For our final project, we had to create a plan for what our lives would look like at 25, including things like mortgages, auto loans, having kids, and picking the right insurance. It really made me think about the financial decisions I’ll need to make as I get older. Overall, this course was super helpful in giving me a better understanding of how to manage my finances in the future. The project about "My Life at 25" is shown here.
Professional Ethics Project
Professional Ethics offers students a comprehensive introduction to the role of ethics in professional settings and why it is essential across all careers. The course explores major ethical philosophies and how they influence decision-making in today’s workplace. Students examine common ethical dilemmas faced by employees and managers, and learn how personal values impact professional behavior. Key topics include ethical leadership, workplace responsibility, decision-making frameworks, and strategies for creating and maintaining an ethical organizational culture. Additionally, students develop critical thinking skills by analyzing real-world scenarios and reflecting on their own ethical beliefs. By the end of the course, students are better prepared to navigate complex ethical situations and build a strong moral foundation for their future careers.
In Professional Ethics, we talked about real-life situations where businesses have to choose between doing the right thing and making money. My project was about human trafficking in hotels and why it can happen there without being noticed. I looked at a real case, came up with solutions like better training and stricter rules, and tested them. This project helped me see how important it is for businesses to take responsibility and keep people safe.
Economics Project
Business Economics introduces students to the fundamental concepts that explain how businesses and markets operate. The course explores the structure of the American economy and the factors that influence business success, including competition, incentives, and consumer behavior. Students learn about different forms of business ownership and the relationship between labor and management, as well as gain a broad understanding of the global economy. Through projects such as analyzing the purchase of a vehicle using economic principles like opportunity cost, trade-offs, and competition, students apply these concepts to real-world decisions. By the end of the course, students develop a clearer understanding of how economic thinking shapes everyday financial and business choices.
In Business Economics, we learned how different economic concepts connect to real business decisions. For our project, we chose a 2019 Volvo S60 and explained why it’s a smart choice for beginner drivers. We looked at things like price, insurance, maintenance costs, competition with brands like BMW and Audi, and ideas like opportunity cost and trade-offs. This project helped me understand how economic concepts actually apply to real purchases and everyday decisions.
