The quote above helps to express and describe my teaching philosophy. My opinion is that the education of students, is more than just that, it is about growing as a team, and a community, it is about working together to achieve a goal. The goal being success. My hope is to create an environment in my classroom, that can achieve that goal. Building a community takes time and effort.
Encourage group work
Encourages students to work together and build relationships with one another. This helps them learn how to collaborate and communicate effectively.
Create a blog/forum
This can give students a platform to share their thoughts and ideas with one another. This helps build a sense of community and foster a supportive learning environment.
Start a class tradition
Create a tradition that your class can participate in each year. This can be as simple as a class picture or even a potluck. Through time, this tradition will help build a sense of community among students and the teacher.
Celebrate successes together
When a student or the whole class achieves a goal or accomplishes something noteworthy, celebrate it together. This helps build a sense of pride and community among students.
In this TED talk, Jordan McFarlen explains the importance of creating a community of learners, and how he created a community based around learning. This exemplifies my teaching philosophy.
Teaching Approaches Related to my Teaching Philosophy
This approach places students at the centre of the learning experience, which helps to emphasize their needs and interests. This helps the teacher develop a positive relationship with their students, creating a supportive and engaging learning environment. Students are empowered to take ownership of their learning and develop critical thinking skills, while the teachers acts as a guide and facilitator.
This approach emphasizes the importance of active learning and the role of the student in constructing their own knowledge. The teacher creates a supporting learning environment that encourages exploration, experimentation, and creativity. The students are also encouraged to work collaboratively, share their ideas and build on each other's knowledge. The teacher acts as a facilitator, providing guidance and support as needed. This requires a strong relationship between the teacher and the student, built on mutual respect and trust.
This approach is based on the principles of critical thinking and inquiry based learning. The teacher encourages students to question assumptions, evaluate evidence, and articulate their own ideas. The goal is that the teacher acts as a mentor, guiding the students towards a deeper understanding of the subject.
