Mediterranean mesophotic Echionoids - Morphology and species descriptions

Hi there, and thank you for browsing through our website. We are two master's degree students pursuing our goal to become marine scientists.
As an integral part of our international master program (IMBRSea), all students engage with active research at a host university for six weeks at least. During this time, we are asked to treat a specific research question and present our time as research trainees based on an actual product. And this is exactly where your browser has brought you today.

On this page, we are presenting two species of sea urchins that can be found in great depths of the Mediterranean Sea.

In this Echinoid sector of the internet you will find:

  • General Information on these interesting unusual forms of life

  • Characteristic features of these organisms

  • A handbook with guidelines to determine distinguishing features of Cidaridae sea urchin family

  • A chance to contribute yourself to the filling of knowledge gaps

Although our professional practice officially lasts six weeks, we will keep updating this webpage for the months to come. The motivation to create this (compendium) is partly driven by prospective topics serving as thesis topics of all degrees. Eventually, we are hoping to provide a public space for contributors with interests in all the sea urchins.

The control of the correctness of the uploaded data will be provided by the Authors themselves. However, comments about the content are welcome. See the contact tab for more info.

On behalf of the Zoology Institute of the Marche Polytechnic University, we would like to welcome you to stay awhile. Take your time to dive into the depth to discover the unknown, fascinating and surprising world of our spiny friends in the seas.
